Expectations were also high for Randal Kolo Muani following his loan arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, but the French striker endured a disappointing spell in North London, managing just one league goal across the entire campaign.
Even Dominic Solanke, who arrived in a deal worth around £65 million, faces uncertainty after another injury-disrupted season. With Roberto De Zerbi determined to rebuild Tottenham into genuine contenders, adding proven attacking quality has become one of the club’s biggest priorities.
One player strongly linked with a move is AC Milan winger Rafael Leao.
Rafael Leao Could Bring Explosive Quality to Spurs
Reports suggest Leao is prepared to leave AC Milan this summer following the arrival of Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to a successful seven-year spell in Italy.
During his time at San Siro, the Portuguese international made 291 appearances, scoring 80 goals while establishing himself as one of Serie A’s most dangerous wide forwards. His explosive pace, dribbling ability and attacking flair consistently caused problems for defenders, particularly from the left flank.
Leao also produced encouraging displays during Portugal’s World Cup campaign. Although he was frequently used as a substitute, he regularly changed games with his direct running and physical presence.
He scored a superb goal against Uzbekistan, registered an assist and averaged 2.2 successful dribbles per game, finishing among the tournament’s leading dribblers. His performances once again highlighted his ability to unlock stubborn defences and create moments of brilliance almost single-handedly.
There is little doubt Leao would instantly improve Tottenham’s attack, giving De Zerbi the kind of explosive wide player capable of deciding matches.
However, there may be an even more attractive option available.
Marcus Rashford Could Be the Bigger Signing
While Leao continues to attract attention, Marcus Rashford has unexpectedly emerged as another potential target for Spurs.
The England international endured a difficult period under Ruben Amorim, eventually leaving on loan after falling out of favour despite making a bright start under the Portuguese manager.
Loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona followed, but with Barcelona reportedly choosing to pursue Anthony Gordon instead, Rashford’s long-term future remains unresolved.
According to recent reports, the current expectation is for Rashford to return to Manchester United, although intermediaries are actively offering him to several elite clubs, with Tottenham believed to be among those approached.
The prospect naturally divides opinion.
Rashford’s recent struggles at Old Trafford, coupled with his sizeable wages, make any transfer a considerable financial commitment. Yet few players possess his combination of pace, finishing ability and experience when performing at his highest level.
England teammate Anthony Gordon even described Rashford as “one of the best players in the world” when in top form, and his performances last season demonstrated why that reputation still exists.
While on loan at Barcelona, Rashford contributed an outstanding 28 goals and assists in all competitions, comfortably surpassing Leao’s return of 13 goal involvements for Milan over the same period.
His European pedigree is equally impressive.
Rashford recorded nine goal contributions in just 11 Champions League appearances last season, taking his overall tally in the competition to 29 goals and assists in only 48 matches. By comparison, Leao has managed 13 goal involvements in 30 Champions League games.
Rashford’s Ceiling Remains Higher
Although inconsistency has affected Rashford’s recent years, his peak performances remain among the best produced by any Premier League forward.
During the 2022/23 campaign, he scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists across all competitions, directly contributing to 42 goals. That remains comfortably ahead of Leao’s best-ever season, which produced 31 combined goals and assists.
Throughout his career, Rashford has consistently found the net at domestic, European and international level. While he may not have fully fulfilled the extraordinary expectations placed upon him after bursting onto the scene as a teenager, he remains capable of transforming games with his pace, movement and clinical finishing.
Verdict
Rafael Leao would undoubtedly represent an exciting addition to Tottenham’s squad, bringing flair, speed and unpredictability to De Zerbi’s attack.
However, if Spurs truly want to make a statement and sign a player capable of elevating the team immediately, Marcus Rashford could offer even greater value.
With reports suggesting he could be available for around £40 million, the England forward represents a rare opportunity to secure a proven match-winner at a relatively affordable price. If Tottenham can navigate the financial aspects of the deal, Rashford may well prove to be the smarter and more transformative signing this summer.
