Premier League Match Centre Issues Statement After ‘Soft’ Liverpool Penalty vs Newcastle

The Premier League Match Centre has explained the controversial late penalty awarded to Liverpool during their dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The decision came deep into stoppage time after Newcastle defender Lewis Hall was adjudged to have fouled Liverpool substitute Victor Muñoz inside the penalty area.

Referee Stuart Attwell immediately pointed to the spot, but the decision sparked plenty of debate, particularly from the Newcastle camp, with manager Matthias Jaissle describing the penalty as “soft”.

Liverpool had found themselves trailing 2-1 heading into the final stages and appeared destined to suffer defeat. However, the late spot-kick handed them a route back into the game, with Dominik Szoboszlai making no mistake from 12 yards to rescue a point for the visitors.

Jaissle was clearly unhappy with the decision after the match and questioned whether the type of contact seen between Hall and Muñoz should be enough to award a penalty.

“I think you call it here a really soft one,” the Newcastle boss said. “If you give that then there will be so many penalties in the future.

“I am not a fan of that, I have to say. I disagree but more I cannot say.”

However, the Premier League Match Centre has now provided an explanation for why the decision was allowed to stand following a VAR check.

According to the Match Centre, VAR reviewed the incident and agreed with Attwell’s original decision to award the penalty.

The referee’s assessment was that Hall did not play the ball before making contact with Muñoz.

The VAR then confirmed that the contact was sufficient to support the on-field decision, describing it as “knee into thigh contact”.

The Premier League’s official explanation stated that the referee’s call of a penalty for Hall’s challenge on Muñoz was checked and confirmed by VAR.

The referee was heard saying: “He doesn’t play the ball. He makes clear contact.”

VAR subsequently responded: “It’s knee into thigh contact. Confirming the on-field decision of penalty.”

The explanation comes as the Premier League begins placing greater emphasis on transparency around refereeing and VAR decisions. The league has announced that it will publish findings from its independent Key Match Incidents Panel on a weekly basis, while its Match Centre will also provide explanations from referees and VAR officials following major incidents.

For Newcastle, however, the explanation is unlikely to make the outcome any easier to accept.

The Magpies had been within seconds of securing a memorable victory after Joe Willock’s late goal appeared to put them in control. Liverpool had already equalised earlier through Cody Gakpo after Anthony Elanga had given Newcastle the lead.

Instead, the late penalty changed the mood completely at St James’ Park.

For Liverpool, the point could prove valuable given the circumstances. They appeared to be heading towards defeat before the controversial incident gave them an opportunity to level the contest.

The penalty decision will undoubtedly continue to generate debate, but the Premier League’s explanation makes its position clear: officials believed Hall failed to play the ball and made sufficient contact with Muñoz to justify the award.

Whether Newcastle supporters agree with that interpretation is another matter entirely.

With the Premier League now promising greater transparency over controversial refereeing decisions, incidents such as this are likely to receive even more scrutiny throughout the season.
