Romano: Tottenham Star May Have Played His Last Game for De Zerbi

According to Fabrizio Romano speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has “probably” already played his final match for the club—though it ultimately depends on one key factor.

Spurs fans had hoped new manager Roberto De Zerbi would spark an immediate turnaround against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, but the result was all too familiar: a 1-0 defeat, with little attacking threat from Tottenham.

Now sitting two points behind West Ham United and the safety line, Spurs have six matches left to avoid slipping into the Championship and facing Lincoln City next season. Meanwhile, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United have found form—Leeds even beating Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday. Tottenham, by contrast, haven’t won a league game since December 28 against Crystal Palace.

De Zerbi needs a swift reversal of fortunes, starting Saturday evening when his former club Brighton visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But he’ll have to do it without Romero, who’s been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Romano: Time for Romero to Leave This Summer

Questions over the Argentine’s future predate the injury he suffered against Sunderland—an injury that not only ends his season but also potentially jeopardizes his place at the 2026 World Cup. Reports from Argentina earlier this year claimed the 27-year-old has already decided to leave Tottenham at season’s end.

Romano stops short of that, but says there’s a growing sense among both player and club that a summer exit is likely. However, Spurs, known as tough negotiators, won’t sell unless their valuation is met. Speaking on the Market Madness podcast, Romano explained:

“There is a feeling around all people involved—on the player’s side and the club’s side—that it’s probably time for Cuti Romero to leave in the summer. It’s always difficult to negotiate with Tottenham, especially for top players. They are tough. There’s no release clause in his contract, just a gentleman’s agreement with the previous chairman Daniel Levy. So no clause to activate.”

Tottenham to Set Romero’s Price

Even if Romero departs regardless of which division Spurs are in next season, his price will be decisive. Tottenham are in a strong negotiating position, as the Argentine has three years left on his deal.

Romano added: “The price is up to Tottenham. They decide. There’s interest from Europe and beyond, so a lot of clubs want Romero. The expectation is that something will happen this summer—but again, it depends on the price.”

It remains to be seen whether Spurs’ valuation of their captain changes if they are relegated to the Championship—a very real possibility at this stage.
