Tottenham wonderkid posts heartfelt message after leaving club

Tottenham youngster Will Lankshear has reflected on what he described as an “unforgettable” loan spell at Oxford United after a breakthrough season in the Championship.

The 21-year-old striker enjoyed an impressive campaign despite Oxford’s difficult season, scoring 12 goals before the club’s relegation was confirmed with two matches remaining.

Lankshear quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his relentless work rate and eye for goal, with one of his standout moments coming in Oxford’s final home game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday. The Spurs forward produced two brilliant goals in a 4-1 victory, although the result was ultimately not enough to save the club from relegation due to results elsewhere.

The young attacker spent the second half of the campaign alongside fellow Tottenham prospect Jamie Donley and finished the season by winning two major awards at Oxford United’s end-of-season ceremony — the men’s Golden Boot and Young Player of the Year.

The loan spell proved to be a major step forward in Lankshear’s development, with the striker making 47 appearances and contributing 16 goals and assists combined across the season.

Following the conclusion of the campaign, Lankshear shared an emotional farewell message on social media alongside a video montage of highlights from his time at the club.

He wrote: “Although it wasn’t the ending we all wanted, I want to thank all the staff, players and fans at Oxford United for making my time here unforgettable. I wish everyone at the club the very best for the future and I’ll always keep an eye on Oxford United. Once a yellow, always a yellow. Keep fighting.”

After proving himself in the Championship with a struggling side, Lankshear is now expected to attract plenty of interest ahead of next season. The striker will also be hoping to impress new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi during pre-season and push for opportunities in Spurs’ first team.

Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield believes the young forward has all the qualities needed to reach the very highest level of the game.

“His finishing, dedication and desire to improve are outstanding,” Bloomfield said. “There’s so much to admire about him, and I truly believe he’s destined for the top.”
