Ally McCoist makes concerning relegation claim about Tottenham but it’s hard to disagree
Ally McCoist Casts Doubt on Tottenham’s Ability to Escape Relegation After Brighton Draw
Ally McCoist has shared his honest assessment of whether Tottenham Hotspur have what it takes to climb out of the relegation zone following their dramatic 2-2 draw with Brighton.
Spurs fans, players, and manager Roberto De Zerbi all believed they had finally secured their first league win of 2026 as the clock wound down against Brighton. But in heartbreaking fashion, the Seagulls equalized deep into stoppage time, leaving Tottenham still stuck in the bottom three.
With only five league games remaining to stage a great escape, one pundit isn’t convinced they have the ability to do so.
McCoist Sees Few Signs of a Turnaround
Ally McCoist fears Tottenham are simply running out of matches to gather the points needed to lift themselves out of the relegation places. He noted that Spurs’ rivals are all picking up positive results, while Tottenham have shown little evidence they can put together a winning run.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, McCoist said: “Tottenham are running out of games, and the teams around them are winning games, whether it’s Leeds or Forest. But the fact of the matter is that this is the second point Tottenham have taken in nine games; they haven’t won a league game this year. So what makes us think they’re going to pick up 10 out of 15 points?
“I know they might not have to if West Ham don’t pick up points, but they’re certainly going to need a vast improvement because Forest and Leeds keep picking up points.”
De Zerbi Remains Confident Despite the Blow
Despite the late heartbreak on Saturday, Tottenham’s new boss found plenty of positives in his side’s performance. In fact, De Zerbi has insisted that Spurs are capable of winning all five of their remaining matches if they replicate the same spirit and mentality they showed against Brighton.
The Tottenham manager made it clear he wants his team to play with attacking intent and take risks in possession—even with their survival hanging in the balance.
