England have provided an update on Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall after the youngster missed training at St George’s Park ahead of the Three Lions’ UEFA Nations League clash with Spain.
Hall was among the players selected by Thomas Tuchel for England’s September and October international window, with the Newcastle defender expected to be involved as England begin their Nations League campaign. The Three Lions are scheduled to face the newly crowned world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26.
However, concerns emerged after Hall was absent from England’s latest training session, raising questions over whether the Newcastle star would be available for the much-anticipated meeting with Spain.
The Football Association has since moved to provide an update, with Hall sitting out the session while the rest of the squad continued preparations at St George’s Park.
According to the FA, Hall’s absence is not currently considered a major concern. The Newcastle defender is understood to be dealing with a minor issue, and England’s latest update has helped ease fears that he could be forced to withdraw from the squad altogether.
An FA statement confirmed that 23 players trained at St George’s Park, while Hall sat out the session. England’s Under-19 players Kaden Braithwaite and Malachi Hardy also joined the senior group for the session.
Hall’s situation will nevertheless be monitored closely in the build-up to Saturday’s showdown with Spain.
The Newcastle defender is particularly important to the squad given the number of defensive changes England have already experienced during this international window. Tino Livramento, who was initially selected alongside Hall, has withdrawn from the squad because of an injury.
Livramento is not the only notable absentee. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have also withdrawn from the England squad because of injury problems. James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White were subsequently called up as replacements.
That situation makes Hall’s fitness something England will continue to monitor, particularly with Spain providing a difficult opening test.
Hall has already earned four senior England caps and made his international debut in November 2024 during England’s 3-0 victory over Greece. He was included in Tuchel’s latest squad as part of the manager’s plans for the new Nations League campaign.
The 2026-27 Nations League campaign represents another opportunity for Hall to establish himself further at international level, but his immediate priority will be recovering fully from the minor issue that kept him out of training.
England will host Spain at Wembley on Saturday evening before travelling to Prague to face Czechia on September 29. They will then meet Croatia in Rijeka on October 3 before returning to Wembley for another meeting with Czechia on October 6.
For Newcastle supporters, the immediate hope will be that Hall’s absence from training proves to be nothing more than a precaution.
With England already dealing with several injury withdrawals, any further setback would provide another unwanted complication for Tuchel ahead of the Spain clash.
For now, however, the FA’s update indicates that Hall’s situation is being treated as a minor issue rather than an immediate reason for him to leave the England camp.
