“I’m not De Zerbi, so I have also my principles”- Fabian Hurzeler makes Roberto De Zerbi admission ahead of Tottenham vs Brighton

Brighton head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening for a Premier League clash, with kick-off set for 5:30pm.

Seagulls manager Fabian Hurzeler has praised Roberto De Zerbi for the lasting impact he made during his spell at the club. Hurzeler, 32, took over in 2024 after De Zerbi departed for Marseille, following a successful period at the Amex where he led Brighton to their highest-ever Premier League finish of sixth and a run to the Europa League knockout stages.

This weekend marks the first time the two coaches will go head-to-head, as a strong Brighton side travel to face a Tottenham team currently battling near the bottom of the table.

De Zerbi remains highly regarded among Brighton supporters, and Hurzeler was quick to acknowledge his predecessor’s influence. Speaking ahead of the match, he said the Italian fully deserves the recognition for guiding the club into European competition and building a strong footballing identity.

Hurzeler explained that he inherited a well-drilled squad with a clear understanding of the game, shaped by De Zerbi’s philosophy. While he has introduced his own ideas and style, he emphasized that his approach has focused more on subtle adjustments rather than major changes, especially as new players have joined who need to adapt to his methods.

Looking ahead to the match, Hurzeler stressed the need for focus and intensity, making it clear that Brighton’s objective remains unchanged despite Tottenham’s situation. He said his side is determined to win and maintain the positive habits that have seen them claim five victories from their last six matches.

He also admitted that Tottenham’s relegation battle has come as a surprise, noting that their struggles highlight just how competitive and unpredictable the Premier League can be.
