adminAlan Shearer commended Newcastle United’s second-half performance as they secured a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
Following a scoreless first half, Newcastle broke the deadlock shortly after the interval when William Osula finished from close range off Jacob Murphy’s cross. Joe Willock had a goal disallowed for offside, but Harvey Barnes then extended the visitors’ lead at Selhurst Park with a composed finish from Amar Dedic’s cross.
The result ended Newcastle’s run of consecutive Premier League defeats and marked a clean sheet after they had lost their previous two away fixtures 4-1. A loss would have left Matthias Jaissle’s side only two points above the relegation zone after eight games, but the win in South London lifted them into the top half and within two points of the top five.
While Shearer acknowledged the Magpies’ improved second-half display, he was quick to highlight Palace’s poor quality, with the hosts having suffered a 5-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion the previous weekend.
“A good second half from the Toon against an awful Palace side,” Shearer wrote on X. “A much-needed 3 points.”
Newcastle’s next fixture is an away trip to face Everton in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, before they welcome the Toffees to St James’ Park in their following Premier League match a week on Monday.
