Frank Lampard Claims Tottenham’s Second Goal Should Have Been DISALLOWED as He Slams Refereeing After Coventry Defeat

Frank Lampard has questioned the decision to allow Tottenham Hotspur’s second goal to stand during their 3-1 victory over Coventry City, insisting that VAR should have intervened over a possible elbow in the build-up.

Tottenham secured a much-needed Premier League victory on Monday evening, ending their disappointing winless run with an impressive performance in front of their home supporters. However, despite the three points, controversy surrounding the officiating has become a major talking point following the final whistle.

Lampard, who watched his Coventry side suffer defeat against Tottenham, was particularly unhappy with the decision to award Spurs their second goal. The former Chelsea and England midfielder believes there was sufficient contact involving Milan van Ewijk to warrant a closer examination by the video assistant referee.

Speaking about the incident, Lampard said: “I think if you roll and your elbows at that height, and it connects with Milan (Van Ewijk) in the contact, I thought VAR would CANCEL IT.”

His comments suggest that Lampard expected the officials to review the incident more carefully before allowing the goal to stand. From his perspective, the nature and height of the contact raised legitimate questions about whether an infringement had occurred.

The Coventry manager also expressed frustration with the overall standard of refereeing during the encounter, arguing that several important decisions did not go in his team’s favour.

Lampard believes those moments made a significant difference to Coventry’s chances of getting a positive result against Tottenham. Although he did not suggest that every decision was necessarily incorrect, his post-match reaction made it clear that he was unhappy with how the game was officiated.

For Coventry, the defeat will be disappointing, particularly given the circumstances surrounding the controversial goal. The Championship side had hoped to challenge Tottenham and potentially take advantage of the pressure surrounding the North London club after their difficult start to the campaign.

Instead, Spurs emerged with all three points, while the debate over the second goal has provided another talking point from the match.

Nevertheless, Lampard’s comments do not automatically mean the goal should have been disallowed. Whether an elbow constitutes an offence depends on the nature of the contact, the player’s actions and whether the incident meets the threshold for a foul. VAR can intervene when the relevant competition’s review criteria are satisfied, but not every physical collision warrants a reversal.

While some supporters may agree with Lampard that the officials should have taken another look, others may argue that the contact was insufficient to justify cancelling the goal.

The controversy has also raised questions about consistency in officiating and how similar incidents are judged from one match to another.

Although Tottenham will be pleased to have secured a crucial victory, the discussion surrounding their second goal is likely to continue among supporters. For Lampard and Coventry, however, the focus will now turn to their next fixture and the need to respond positively after a frustrating evening.

Ultimately, Lampard has made his position clear: he believes Tottenham’s second goal should not have stood, and he is unhappy that VAR did not intervene. Whether the incident was a clear refereeing error or simply a decision that could reasonably be debated remains a matter of interpretation.
