Premier League Releases Official Statement on Kevin Danso’s Controversial Red Card as Sunderland Fans Question Referee’s Decision

Sunderland supporters have been left frustrated after the Premier League released an official explanation for Kevin Danso’s controversial red card during their 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Austrian defender was sent off in the 17th minute at the Vitality Stadium after bringing down Bournemouth striker Evanilson, who was running towards goal. The decision immediately sparked protests from Danso, but referee Craig Pawson showed him a straight red card.

Despite the defender’s objections, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the incident and upheld the original decision, leaving Sunderland with ten players for most of the match.

Why Kevin Danso Was Sent Off

The incident occurred after Bournemouth played a long ball forward that Sunderland’s defence failed to deal with effectively. Evanilson took advantage of the defensive mistake, won possession and attempted to advance towards goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

Danso subsequently pulled the Brazilian striker to the ground outside the penalty area, prompting the referee to dismiss him for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

The Premier League Match Centre later confirmed that VAR had checked and supported the referee’s decision.

According to the official explanation, Evanilson was in possession of the ball when Danso pulled him down. The officials therefore considered the incident a clear denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity, commonly known as DOGSO.

Although some supporters questioned the decision because the incident occurred outside the penalty area, the location of the foul did not prevent the referee from issuing a red card.

Under football’s laws, a player can receive a straight red card for denying an opponent an obvious goalscoring opportunity, regardless of whether the offence takes place inside or outside the penalty area.

Bournemouth Take Advantage of Sunderland’s Defensive Problems

Bournemouth capitalised on their numerical advantage to secure a crucial 2-0 victory, with Marcus Tavernier opening the scoring in the sixth minute before Evanilson added the second shortly after half-time.

The result marked an important moment for Bournemouth manager Marco Rose, who recorded his first Premier League victory with the club.

For Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris, however, the defeat represented another disappointing setback. His team struggled to contain Bournemouth’s attacking threat, while Danso’s dismissal made an already difficult afternoon even more challenging.

The Black Cats had hoped to return to winning ways, but their defensive mistakes and inability to recover from the early setback ultimately proved costly.

Sunderland Face Another Selection Problem

Danso’s dismissal also presents Sunderland with a selection headache ahead of their next Premier League fixture against Leeds United.

The defender is expected to miss that match through suspension, leaving Le Bris to consider alternative defensive options.

With Sunderland already struggling for consistency in the league, losing a regular centre-back could complicate their efforts to improve their performances.

The club must now find a way to tighten their defence and avoid further costly mistakes as pressure continues to build.

Fans Question the Decision

The incident has generated debate among football supporters, particularly those who believe refereeing decisions can significantly influence the outcome of closely contested matches.

However, the Premier League’s explanation makes the officials’ position clear: Danso was dismissed because he pulled down an opponent who was through on goal, and VAR found no reason to overturn the decision.

While Sunderland fans may remain unhappy with the circumstances surrounding the dismissal, the official verdict confirms that the red card was upheld under the laws of the game.

What do you think? Was Kevin Danso’s red card the correct decision, or should the referee have handled the incident differently? Share your thoughts in the comments.
