Sunderland suffered their second defeat of the Premier League campaign on Sunday, but Régis Le Bris’ side produced an attacking performance that made Manchester City work extremely hard for all three points.
The eight-goal thriller saw Brian Brobbey emerge as the standout player for the visitors, with the striker scoring a superb hat-trick as Sunderland repeatedly fought their way back into the contest.
Manchester City opened the scoring through Enzo Fernández before Brobbey quickly restored parity. Rayan Cherki then put the hosts back in front, only for Brobbey to equalise again.
Antoine Semenyo restored City’s advantage shortly before half-time before adding another after the interval. Brobbey completed his hat-trick to make it 4-3, leaving Sunderland within touching distance of a remarkable comeback.
However, Erling Haaland eventually settled the contest in the 81st minute, scoring City’s fifth goal after a VAR review confirmed the goal following an initial offside decision.
Despite the defeat, Sunderland’s performance contained plenty of encouragement. The Black Cats registered 17 shots compared with Manchester City’s 16 and reportedly finished with a higher expected-goals figure than the home side.
Brobbey was particularly impressive, repeatedly causing problems for the City defence and completing the first Premier League hat-trick by a Sunderland player since Jermain Defoe in 2016.

The former Republic of Ireland international was said to have been extremely unimpressed with the player’s display and questioned how such a performance could have been produced in a match of such importance.

Supporters argued that Sunderland’s defensive problems could not simply be placed on one player. Manchester City scored five times, but Sunderland also found the net three times and created numerous opportunities against one of the Premier League’s strongest sides.

At the same time, Le Bris will know that scoring three goals away to Manchester City is unlikely to be enough if his team continues to concede at such a high rate.

As for the Sunderland player at the centre of the reported Keane criticism, the most effective response will ultimately have to come on the pitch.
The defeat at the Etihad does not erase the positives from Sunderland’s performance, but it does highlight areas that require improvement.
Manchester City eventually secured a 5-3 victory and maintained their perfect start to the Premier League campaign, while Sunderland were left to reflect on a match they came remarkably close to turning into one of the season’s biggest surprises.
