Xabi Alonso Breaks Silence After Chelsea’s 2-2 Draw With Hull City

Xabi Alonso has admitted that Chelsea must become much tougher defensively after his side were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea looked on course for another home victory after Morgan Rogers gave the Blues an early lead, but Hull responded impressively and turned the game around before half-time through Mohamed Belloumi.

João Pedro eventually rescued a point for Alonso’s side in the second half, but Chelsea were unable to find a winning goal despite creating opportunities late in the game.

Speaking after the match, Alonso acknowledged that his team continues to repeat the same mistakes and insisted that the defensive problems must be addressed.

“It may be entertaining but I hope one day you say it’s a boring game and we win,” Alonso said after the match.

The Chelsea boss admitted that his players need to be more competitive after taking the lead, particularly when opponents begin to apply pressure.

“It kind of repeats some patterns we are making. It will take time to fix them. When we take the lead, we still need to be competing and not give up the chances so easily,” he added.

Chelsea’s defensive struggles have become one of the major talking points of Alonso’s early reign. The Blues have now conceded nine goals in their opening four Premier League matches and remain without a league clean sheet in their last 20 games.

Alonso was particularly concerned by the manner in which Hull were allowed back into the game after Chelsea had started strongly.

“We need to be aware that any situation, any team in the Premier League can hurt you,” he explained.

“It was a long ball, two bounces, the way it happened. The danger can come from any situation. If you are soft, if you don’t prepare, you will be punished.”

The Spanish coach also admitted that Chelsea are currently performing better in attack than in defence.

“I think that we are attacking better than defending. It’s a big topic and a big theme for us,” Alonso said.

He stressed that his players must improve in several areas, including defending open play, set pieces and long balls, while also developing a stronger competitive mentality.

Chelsea had to settle for a second consecutive league game without a victory, while Hull extended their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Despite dropping points, Alonso remains focused on improving his team rather than making excuses. His message after the Hull draw was clear: Chelsea cannot continue conceding cheaply if they want to compete at the highest level.

For Alonso, the entertaining football must eventually be accompanied by defensive discipline—and he will now be expected to find a solution quickly.
