The club have completed the capture of 18-year-old Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo from renowned South American talent-producing club Independiente del Valle.
Angulo has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Sunderland, with reports suggesting the Black Cats have paid approximately £5 million to secure the highly rated teenager.
Although his name will be unfamiliar to many supporters in England, Angulo has already attracted significant attention in South American football. Standing at an imposing 6ft 4in, the young centre-forward combines considerable physical strength with an ability to find the back of the net.
So, who exactly is Sunderland’s latest recruit, what qualities does he possess, and what could supporters expect from him on Wearside?
Who Is Juan Riquelme Angulo?
Born in San Lorenzo, Ecuador, in 2008, Angulo began his footballing journey within the highly respected academy system at Independiente del Valle.
Despite sharing his name with legendary Argentine midfielder Juan Román Riquelme, the Ecuadorian youngster is a very different type of player. At 6ft 4in, Angulo operates primarily as a central striker and uses his size, strength and aerial ability to make life difficult for opposing defenders.
His performances at youth international level, particularly during the U17 Copa América, helped establish him as one of Ecuador’s most exciting young prospects.
His development accelerated quickly, eventually earning him opportunities with Independiente del Valle’s senior side. That progression has subsequently attracted interest from clubs and scouts across both South America and Europe.
Angulo made his professional debut for Independiente del Valle in March 2026 and immediately announced himself by scoring against Mushuc Runa.
Later that same month, his progress was rewarded with his first call-up to the Ecuador senior national team. He has also gained valuable experience by featuring in the Copa Libertadores.
What Do His Numbers Tell Us?
Angulo’s statistics provide plenty of encouragement and help explain why Sunderland were prepared to invest in his potential.
The 18-year-old leaves Independiente del Valle having scored six goals in 15 league appearances this season, averaging a goal every 115 minutes. He has also contributed three assists.
Those numbers are particularly impressive considering how early Angulo remains in his professional career.
His physical attributes are one of the most obvious parts of his game. He has shown an ability to win more than half of his individual duels, giving Sunderland a powerful focal point through which they can build attacks.
His height and strength should also make him useful when Sunderland adopt a more direct approach, particularly when attacking crosses and competing for long balls.
However, Angulo’s game is not simply built around physicality. His movement and instinct inside the penalty area are also major strengths.
His underlying numbers point towards a striker capable of consistently generating dangerous scoring opportunities, with his expected-goals output per 90 minutes standing out when compared with averages from Europe’s top five leagues and players such as Brian Brobbey and Isidor from last season.
The Verdict
Angulo’s arrival represents another example of Sunderland’s strategy of identifying promising young players before their value rises dramatically.
Independiente del Valle has developed a reputation for producing elite young talent, with players such as Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho all emerging from the Ecuadorian club’s system.
Sunderland will be hoping Angulo can follow a similar path.
However, supporters should probably temper expectations. Despite his exciting statistics and enormous potential, it would be unrealistic to expect the teenager to immediately arrive at the Academy of Light and score 20 goals in his first season.
Instead, Angulo should be viewed as a long-term investment with the potential to become a major asset for the club.
With a manager who values the development of young players and an environment capable of helping emerging talents grow, Sunderland appear to have created the conditions for Angulo to flourish.
There is clearly plenty of work still to be done, but the early signs are encouraging. If the Ecuadorian striker can adapt quickly to English football and continue his development, Sunderland may eventually look back on his reported £5 million fee as one of the smartest investments of the summer.
