Charlton struggled to cope with Tottenham’s attacking quality throughout the contest, with Spurs eventually running away with a convincing victory. Despite the disappointing scoreline, Jones highlighted the quality of Savinho, who proved to be one of the most influential players on the pitch.
The Brazilian winger caused constant problems with his pace, movement and ability to take on defenders. His direct approach created openings and gave Charlton’s defence a difficult evening as Tottenham maintained pressure in the final third.
Jones acknowledged that his side had been punished by a Tottenham team capable of turning small mistakes into dangerous opportunities.
“Savinho was outstanding tonight,” Jones said after the match. “You can see why he is playing at this level. His pace, his movement and the way he attacks defenders make him extremely difficult to contain.”
The Charlton boss also insisted that the 5-1 scoreline should not completely overshadow the positives his players could take from facing a team of Tottenham’s quality.
“We have to be honest about the result. Five goals conceded is not good enough, but there were moments where we competed and showed what we are capable of,” Jones explained.
Tottenham’s superior quality ultimately proved decisive, however, as Charlton struggled to maintain their defensive organisation against the Premier League side’s attacking threats.
Jones will now turn his attention back to league matters, with the manager expected to use the experience as a learning opportunity for his squad.
For Savinho, meanwhile, the performance offered another reminder of the attacking talent available to Tottenham, with his pace and creativity standing out during a night in which Spurs comfortably progressed at Charlton’s expense.
