adminFinishing 17th in the Premier League would normally leave little room for optimism, but Tottenham Hotspur have somehow turned a disappointing campaign into a summer of major ambition.
The Lilywhites have rebuilt their squad impressively, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi all arriving as statement signings. However, one major area remains untouched: the attack.
With only around a week and a half remaining in the transfer window, Tottenham know they cannot afford to waste any more time. Roberto De Zerbi needs another striker, although two of the biggest names linked with a move to north London, Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, appear difficult to land.
Kane, in particular, seems determined to remain at Bayern Munich for the time being.
Could Harry Kane Really Return to Tottenham?
The possibility of Kane eventually returning to Tottenham has always remained in the minds of Spurs supporters.
The England captain has already won the Bundesliga twice with Bayern and has established himself among the greatest strikers of his generation. Last season, he produced an extraordinary 61-goal campaign and strengthened his case for the Ballon d’Or.
Given his current status, Tottenham would have little chance of convincing Bayern to let him leave this summer, particularly after their impressive recruitment campaign. However, there have been reports suggesting Spurs have maintained contact with Kane’s camp regarding a potential future return.
That possibility is partly linked to his contract situation. Kane’s current Bayern deal expires in a year, although the striker has made it clear that he wants to remain in Germany for now.
Speaking this week, Kane revealed that discussions over his future are expected to begin soon, saying the two sides had agreed to speak after the World Cup and his holiday.
He also admitted that the situation is becoming increasingly important because only one year remains on his contract.
For now, De Zerbi will have to wait. Kane is highly unlikely to return to Tottenham this summer, but a comeback in the next few years cannot be completely ruled out.
How Tottenham Could Replace Kane
Replacing a player who scored 280 goals for Tottenham is virtually impossible, so Spurs will need to keep expectations realistic.
That has not stopped supporters from demanding more from Richarlison and Dominic Solanke. The pair managed only 18 goals between them last season, although Solanke’s campaign was disrupted by injury.
Tottenham therefore have a clear opportunity to upgrade their attacking options this summer, and that appears to be exactly what the club intends to do.
Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo have emerged as potential targets, although convincing Liverpool to sell Gakpo could prove difficult. The Reds reportedly want to bring in two wingers before allowing the Dutch forward to leave.
As a result, Tottenham have also turned their attention towards Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush.
Reports initially revealed Spurs’ interest on Wednesday evening, with Fabrizio Romano subsequently providing further details on the club’s attacking plans.
According to Romano, Tottenham are working on several opportunities, including two wingers and a striker. Savinho is understood to be the priority on the wing, while Gakpo is another option. Marmoush, meanwhile, has emerged as a possibility for the central striker position.
There have reportedly already been discussions between Tottenham and Manchester City regarding both Savinho and Marmoush, suggesting further negotiations could follow.
If Tottenham want to prise Marmoush away from the Etihad, they may have to spend around £68 million. However, there is a strong argument that the Egyptian would justify such an investment.
Marmoush may never replicate the extraordinary numbers Kane produced at Tottenham, but he has shown enough to suggest he could become Spurs’ most influential forward since their former captain.
The 27-year-old endured a relatively difficult 2025/26 campaign, featuring for just 1,393 minutes across all competitions and scoring eight goals. Even so, his goal every 174 minutes was a better rate than any Tottenham player managed last season.
His previous campaign provides an even stronger indication of what he can offer.
Before moving to Manchester City midway through the 2024/25 season, Marmoush scored 15 goals in 17 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt, averaging 0.80 goals per 90 minutes and finding the net once every 103 minutes.
He finished that campaign with 28 goals in 51 appearances for Frankfurt and City combined, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.
His creativity was equally impressive. Marmoush finished the season with 17 assists, showing that he could contribute not only as a goalscorer but also as a creator.
Although he frequently operated from a wide position, he also played as the main striker on 34 occasions for his two clubs. From that central role, he produced 19 goals and 12 assists.
Marmoush is certainly not a direct replica of Kane, but Tottenham could still have good reason to believe he can become the club’s best attacking player since their legendary England striker.
