Kevin Phillips Makes Worrying Dayann Methalie Transfer Admission as Régis Le Bris Urged to Act

Kevin Phillips has expressed concern over Sunderland’s pursuit of Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, while making it clear that he would be delighted to see the talented youngster arrive at the Stadium of Light.

The Sunderland legend believes the Black Cats need to act quickly if they are genuinely determined to sign the highly-rated left-back, warning head coach Régis Le Bris that delaying could allow the opportunity to disappear.

Methalie, 20, has reportedly become one of Sunderland’s key defensive targets this summer. The France Under-21 international has attracted attention with his pace, strength, progressive style of play and defensive ability. Toulouse are believed to value him at approximately €40 million, reflecting his potential and the level of interest surrounding him.

Phillips is excited by the possibility of Methalie joining Sunderland but insists the club cannot afford to hesitate.

“He’s a top player, without question, and I’d love to see Methalie at Sunderland,” Phillips said.

“But deals like this can disappear very quickly when you hesitate. Toulouse know exactly how valuable he is, and other clubs will be interested. If Sunderland genuinely want him, they need to demonstrate that now.”

Phillips feels the timing could be crucial, with the transfer window entering an important stage. He believes Sunderland must establish whether Methalie is a priority or risk watching another club secure his signature.

Sunderland have already strengthened their squad this summer, including the arrival of Thomas Meunier, but Phillips believes adding a young defender with Methalie’s potential would send a strong message about the club’s ambitions.

“Le Bris understands what he expects from his full-backs,” Phillips added. “Methalie fits that profile perfectly. He’s aggressive, technically gifted and confident with the ball. But identifying a player and actually signing him are two completely different things. Sunderland have to be prepared to make their move.”

With negotiations potentially entering a crucial period, the coming days could determine whether Sunderland can secure the highly-rated defender. Phillips’ warning is straightforward: if the Black Cats are serious about Methalie, they cannot afford to sit back and wait.
