Jude Bellingham needed just a single word to dismiss Thomas Tuchel’s frustration with England’s performance against Norway: “Whatever.”
It was a striking retort from the Real Madrid star, one that is bound to raise uncomfortable questions about the dynamic between the England manager and his key player.
Bellingham was England’s match-winner in Miami, scoring twice—including a first-half equaliser and an extra-time clinching goal—to see off a resilient Norwegian side and his former teammate Erling Haaland.
Yet, as the stadium rang out with chants of “Hey Jude,” Tuchel used his ITV interview to launch a scathing critique of his team. The German was far from satisfied, pointing to a display that saw England fall behind and rely on a VAR reprieve to avoid going 2-1 down in the second half.
“We made life very difficult for ourselves today,” Tuchel said. “The result is great, we’re in the last four, that’s fantastic, but no, I’m not happy with the performance.
In every aspect. The effort is there, but we made it hard for ourselves—sloppy play, too many technical errors, lacking speed and repetition. We were fortunate today.
It’s not about mentality. It’s about the quality of our game. Nothing to do with mentality.”
Tuchel added: “We will get better. We have to get better.”
When ITV’s Gabriel Clarke raised Bellingham’s display, Tuchel was full of praise for the man of the match, saying: “Enough said. He does it every game. World class.”
Bellingham, however, offered a different tone when reflecting on England’s progress. Asked what had carried them through, he said: “Character, persistence, even when things weren’t clicking. We found a way to win again—whether it’s in 90 minutes or 120, we’ll give everything. You saw that out there. So proud of this group once more.
This win is for everyone. The whole country is behind us. It’s a huge effort from all.”
When told that Tuchel had expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, England’s No. 10—now with six tournament goals—responded curtly: “Yeah, well, whatever. Whatever.
It’s tough out there. It’s a hard shift. All the players put in a huge shift, and my appreciation goes to them for doing that again.”
The exchange suggested a clear disconnect between Bellingham and Tuchel, despite the midfielder’s outstanding individual form and England’s run to the semi-finals.
Harry Kane offered a more diplomatic take on Tuchel’s comments: “He told us in the dressing room—huge congratulations, enjoy it and celebrate, but there’s a part of him that knows we can do better.
That’s actually a positive because we’re in a World Cup semi-final and still feel we can improve and find another level. We should take that as a good sign.”
While Kane may see it that way, it appears Bellingham does not share the same outlook.
