Arsenal incident investigation lands West Ham with FA charge & ban ahead of Newcastle United trip

West Ham United are facing an FA charge as they prepare for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The charge concerns Hammers goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa, following an incident during his side’s controversial 1-0 loss to Arsenal. The only goal of that match came from Leandro Trossard in the 83rd minute, while West Ham had a late equaliser from Callum Wilson disallowed by VAR.

That decision could have significant implications at both ends of the table. West Ham currently sit just two points above the relegation zone, while Arsenal are two points clear of Manchester City at the top with two matches left to play.

Late in the game, Barbosa was shown a red card by referee Chris Kavanagh after reacting to Arsenal defender William Saliba kicking the ball away—an incident that earned Saliba a yellow card. The FA has now confirmed that Barbosa faces a misconduct charge and a touchline ban for Sunday’s match.

An FA spokesperson stated: “Rui Barbosa of West Ham United has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday 10 May.

“It is alleged that around the 88th minute, the goalkeeping coach used offensive, insulting, or abusive language and/or gestures, leading to his dismissal. It is further alleged that after the final whistle, he behaved improperly and/or directed abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour toward a match official.

“Rui Barbosa has until Monday 18 May to provide a response.”
