Portsmouth and Everton are among the ‘plethora’ of Premier League and Championship clubs eyeing Manchester City’s Alex Robertson, according to FTBL.
Portsmouth had midfielder Robertson on loan for the 2023/24 season, and his starring performances in the middle of the park put him on the Everton radar ahead of the January window.
The Australian prospect had become a key player for John Mousinho, operating either as an attacking midfielder or in a deeper role alongside club captain Marlon Pack.
Injury brought a premature end to Robertson’s season, but the 21-year-old’s efforts were still vital in Pompey’s title win as he notched a goal and four assists in 27 outings.
Now, with the summer window underway, links with a move have re-emerged.
Australian news outlet FTBL states that Robertson has a ‘plethora’ of Premier League and Championship clubs chasing his signature. Recent loan club Portsmouth and previous admirers Everton are among them.
Manchester City could sanction a permanent exit for the Dundee-born prospect, with his future likely to be decided in the coming weeks.
Back to Pompey?
It seems highly likely that Robertson gets a move of some sort this summer. Manchester City could send him out on loan again, but a permanent move would raise funds for them while allowing their midfield prospect to really settle and kick on elsewhere.
With that outcome a very real possibility, it’s no surprise that Portsmouth are keen on bringing him back to Fratton Park.
Robertson was a firm favourite among the Pompey faithful and having proven his ability in League One, a move to the Championship could be the logical next step for him to take.
With Premier League sides such as Everton keen though, there could be an eye-catching option for him to play top-flight football. Even with his Pompey success in mind, that could make a deal tough for the promotion-winners.
Midfielders on the radar
Midfield is an area Portsmouth are bound to bolster ahead of their Championship return.
Loan players are returning to their parent clubs while departures are expected. There has been no final decision confirmed over Joe Morrell’s future but has it stands, he will follow Lee Evans through the exit door.
That would leave just Marlon Pack, Owen Moxon, Ben Stevenson and Terry Devlin on the books. The latter featured rarely in League One, so prevalent second-tier roles seem unlikely.
A reunion move for Robertson would be a hugely popular one, but time will tell if Pompey are able to pull a deal off amid wide interest in his services.
