adminTottenham Hotspur have enjoyed one of the busiest transfer windows in the Premier League this summer, but despite their aggressive recruitment drive, the club has now decided to abandon one planned signing. According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Spurs have officially ended their pursuit of midfielder Joao Palhinha.
The North London club has already made several notable additions to its squad. Experienced trio Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka arrived on free transfers, while defender Jan Paul van Hecke joined from Brighton.
Tottenham also shattered their previous transfer record by completing an £85 million move for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.
To further underline their ambitions, Spurs reportedly agreed a sensational £100 million deal to bring Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali to the club.
After consecutive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League, the club appears determined to rebuild under new manager Roberto De Zerbi and challenge much higher up the table next season.
Tottenham End Interest in Joao Palhinha
Before the latest arrivals, De Zerbi had expressed a strong desire to keep Portugal international Joao Palhinha at Tottenham following his loan spell during the 2025/26 campaign.
The Italian coach reportedly regarded the experienced midfielder as one of the finest players in his position and believed he could play an important role in his plans.
Palhinha himself was believed to favour a return to Tottenham despite holding discussions with Sporting CP over a possible transfer. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich were eager to secure a permanent sale as they looked to reshape their squad.
However, Spurs’ transfer strategy changed significantly after completing the signing of Mateus Fernandes and reaching an agreement for Sandro Tonali. With those deals in place, the club has decided against bringing Palhinha back.
Florian Plettenberg confirmed the development, stating that Palhinha is now expected to return to Bayern Munich, with Tottenham’s interest completely over following the arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes.
He also revealed that a move to Sporting CP remains difficult because Bayern’s asking price is proving to be a major obstacle, although other clubs continue to monitor the midfielder’s situation as negotiations continue.
A Sensible Decision for Spurs
While Palhinha impressed during his spell at Tottenham and once again showcased the qualities that have made him one of Europe’s most reliable defensive midfielders, the club’s decision appears understandable.
The 30-year-old remains an excellent ball-winner, covers huge areas of the pitch, and provides valuable defensive protection. However, his limitations in possession and distribution have often been highlighted, particularly when compared to more modern midfielders capable of dictating play.
Although his important goals last season played a key role in helping Tottenham preserve their Premier League status, the arrival of higher-profile midfielders has changed the picture.
With Tonali and Fernandes joining an already talented midfield group that includes Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pape Matar Sarr, opportunities for Palhinha would likely have been limited.
Rather than investing further in a position that is now well stocked, Tottenham’s decision to walk away from the deal allows the club to focus its financial resources on strengthening other areas of the squad as De Zerbi continues to shape his team for the new campaign.
