The flashpoint came in the first half, when Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin went down under a challenge from Destiny Udogie inside the box. A lengthy VAR review followed, with officials ultimately ruling that Calvert-Lewin was marginally offside in the build-up—by what many described as no more than a “toe”—denying Leeds a possible penalty that could have shifted the momentum of a tense relegation battle.
Spurs had taken a stunning lead through Mathys Tel, but Calvert-Lewin later converted from the spot after Tel’s reckless overhead kick on Ethan Ampadu.
Furious Leeds fans, accusing officials of inconsistent application of the offside rule, took to social media and gathered outside the stadium demanding transparency.
Supporters’ groups quickly launched an online petition calling for the release of the referee-VAR audio, branding the incident “another example of systemic bias against promoted sides.”
The campaign gained rapid traction, surpassing 50,000 signatures by Tuesday morning.
Under intensifying pressure, the Premier League and PGMOL agreed to release the unedited audio exchange. In the recording, the referee is heard expressing doubts about the tightness of the call, while the VAR operator insists the marginal offside is “clear and obvious” under current protocols.
Although the decision stood, the release has only deepened the debate over the precision of semi-automated offside technology and the lack of leeway in close calls.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke welcomed the disclosure but lamented that it “doesn’t change the two points dropped.” Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi urged calm, asserting that officials “got it right on the night.”
The controversy has added fresh fuel to ongoing discussions about VAR transparency as the season enters its critical final weeks.
