Alan Shearer sets Tottenham a clear points target to avoid Premier League relegation
Alan Shearer Breaks Down Tottenham’s Survival Hopes as Relegation Battle Nears Its Climax
Tottenham Hotspur’s fight for Premier League survival remains finely balanced, and legendary former striker Alan Shearer has offered a clear indication of what might be enough to decide their fate.
De Zerbi’s Quick Impact at Spurs
It has taken Roberto De Zerbi just four games to guide Tottenham to back-to-back Premier League wins—something the club hadn’t achieved since August.
Spurs followed up their 1–0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers with a 2–1 win against Aston Villa, courtesy of goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison. That result not only marked a much-improved performance but also lifted De Zerbi’s side out of the relegation zone with three matches remaining.
However, there is still plenty to play for. Spurs are far from safe, sitting just one point above 18th-placed West Ham United.
What Shearer Predicts for West Ham’s Run-In
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer assessed West Ham’s chances and outlined what Tottenham must do to secure their top-flight status.
He said: “That’s a big, tough weekend for West Ham, after being beaten quite convincingly, and then having to sit through that Tottenham game and watch how good Tottenham were.
“I think with West Ham, with their games coming up—their next two are Arsenal at home and Newcastle away, and they finish with Leeds. I think there’s probably three points there for West Ham over the next three games. So it’s been a terrible weekend for West Ham.
“The best chance of getting three points, I think, is that last home game. Whether that’s going to be enough or not, I do not know, but it is tough for them now.”
Shearer added that he does not expect West Ham to take anything from their matches against Arsenal and Newcastle. Therefore, if Spurs can pick up three points against Leeds—or even secure a couple of draws—Shearer believes that would likely be enough for Tottenham to survive.
A Defining Weekend for Tottenham
This weekend is set to be pivotal for Spurs, who will find themselves in an uncomfortable position as West Ham face Arsenal.
The Gunners, Tottenham’s fiercest rivals, are pushing for the Premier League title and now hold an advantage following Manchester City’s latest draw. A victory over West Ham would bring Mikel Arteta’s men closer to the trophy—something most Spurs fans would rather not see—but it would also push Tottenham closer to safety.
It’s a classic double-edged sword. Should West Ham win instead, they would leapfrog Spurs into 17th place before the Lilywhites face Leeds United on Monday night.
Regardless, Tottenham must focus on winning their own games. Their destiny remains in their own hands.
