West Ham United’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Cardiff City was supposed to mark a fresh start under new manager Scott Parker. Instead, it exposed familiar frailties — and one player in particular is bearing the brunt of supporters’ frustration.
A First Half to Forget
Parker’s first match in charge, following Nuno Espírito Santo’s departure, quickly turned into a nightmare at Cardiff City Stadium. The Hammers found themselves three goals down before half-time, with Cardiff’s Jack Moylan delivering a sensational first-half hat-trick.
Moylan opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a powerful 20-yard strike into the top corner, doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, and completed his treble two minutes later with a header from a corner.
West Ham’s defensive organisation was virtually non-existent, and the travelling support made their feelings clear — chants of “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” rang out from the away end, with some fans reportedly leaving before the interval.
Second-Half Rescue Masks Underlying Problems
To their credit, the Hammers produced a remarkable comeback. Divine Mukasa, Arne Engels and Max Kilman all found the net after the break to salvage a point. Parker also deserves credit for his half-time substitutions, with Mohamadou Kanté and Joël Piroe helping to transform the contest.
But the fightback did little to quiet the debate surrounding goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
Hermansen Under Fire
While it would be unfair to pin all three goals on the Danish goalkeeper — the opener was a spectacular long-range effort, the second a penalty that sent him the wrong way, and the third a header from a corner where marking was also at fault — the wider frustration extends well beyond Wednesday’s match.
Supporters have questioned Hermansen’s form for some time, particularly following recent defeats to Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. Against West Brom, West Ham conceded three goals from three shots on target, intensifying concerns over Hermansen’s ability to produce crucial saves.
The criticism has grown pointed enough that some fans have taken to calling him “T-Rex,” a reference to their doubts about his reach.
Fans Demand a Change Between the Posts
With Alphonse Areola waiting in the wings, a growing section of the fanbase believes Parker should seriously consider a change of first-choice goalkeeper. Among the sentiments expressed in online discussions:
· “He seems like a starter simply because he cost us so much we can’t afford to bench him.”
· “Hermansen needs to be dropped. Has Areola had a falling out with the manager?”
· “If we don’t go up, it’ll be down to the defence and keeper. We need to sort this out.”
Parker’s First Big Call
The new manager now faces a significant decision ahead of West Ham’s next Championship fixture. The club is fighting for an immediate return to the Premier League and cannot afford to keep dropping points through individual errors or a lack of confidence between the posts.
Hermansen is still young enough to improve, but his recent performances have left supporters demanding answers. Whether Parker keeps faith with the Dane or hands Areola an opportunity remains to be seen.
One thing is certain: the pressure is mounting, and Hermansen needs to start giving West Ham fans reasons to believe in him again.
