Bellingham Fires Back at Tuchel’s “Sloppy” Label After England Edge Norway in World Cup Classic

Jude Bellingham delivered a pointed response to Thomas Tuchel’s criticism following England’s hard-fought 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals, a win that booked their place in the last four.

The Three Lions were pushed to the brink by a spirited Norwegian side, who had taken a first-half lead through Andreas Schjelderup before Bellingham’s stoppage-time equaliser restored parity. The Real Madrid midfielder then struck again early in extra time, capitalising on a spilled long-range effort from Morgan Rogers to secure the win.

England now advance to a semi-final showdown with Argentina, who dispatched Switzerland 3-1 in their own quarter-final clash.

Despite the result, Tuchel was far from satisfied with his team’s display. Speaking to ITV after the final whistle, the German manager did not hold back: “We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today.

“The result is fantastic. We are in the last four. It’s amazing, but I am not happy with the performance—in every sense. The commitment is there, but we made life difficult for us in the way we played and how we played—sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough.”

Those comments clearly stung Bellingham, who was visibly irked when pressed on his manager’s assessment during his own post-match interview. The former Borussia Dortmund star, now just two goals behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the race for the Golden Boot, offered a terse reply: “Yeah, well… whatever. Whatever. It’s difficult out there. It’s a tough shift.

“All the players are putting in a tough shift. So my thoughts and appreciation go to the players who put in a good shift out there.”

Prodded to expand, Bellingham suggested Tuchel’s critique either reflected his exacting standards or a failure to appreciate the quality of the opposition and the gruelling Miami conditions.

“Maybe [it shows the standards he expects], or maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kinds of conditions against Erling Haaland, Ødegaard, Nusa, Sørloth—that’s not an easy team to play against,” Bellingham remarked.

The oppressive humidity at the Hard Rock Stadium meant that, despite a kick-off temperature of around 35°C, the ‘real feel’ soared to approximately 43°C—a factor that clearly took its toll on both sets of players.

Bellingham continued: “I think we tried to create a positive environment, and we should continue that going into the final four. I can’t speak highly enough of the lads. You’re not going to win every game popping the ball around and making 1,000 passes.

“Sometimes you have to win dirty, and we’ve done that again tonight.”

The victory marks England’s second World Cup semi-final appearance in their last three tournaments and their fourth in five major international competitions, including the European Championships. Prior to 2018, the Three Lions had reached just one semi-final (in 1990) since their solitary World Cup triumph in 1966.

They now face the daunting prospect of Messi’s Argentina on Wednesday, July 15, at 8pm BST, at the Atlanta Stadium—a clash that will define both teams’ campaigns.
