Sharpe Slams “Joke” Red Card as Leeds Impress in Statement Win Over Manchester United

Former Manchester United and Leeds United winger Lee Sharpe has slammed the red card given to Lisandro Martinez in Monday’s clash between the two sides, calling the decision “a joke” and a prime example of overly strict refereeing.

The incident took place in the 56th minute when Martinez was sent off after a VAR intervention by referee Paul Tierney. The Argentine defender was shown a straight red for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair—an act VAR deemed violent conduct. The call drew immediate criticism from pundits and players.

Manchester United’s interim manager Michael Carrick didn’t hold back, describing the decision as “shocking” and “one of the worst” he had ever seen. Carrick insisted there was no malicious intent and pointed to what he saw as more aggressive play earlier in the move.

Sharpe, who played for both clubs, agreed. He argued the punishment was excessive and questioned how violent conduct is interpreted in today’s game. “It’s a joke of a decision,” Sharpe said. “A free kick or even a yellow, fine—but a red? That’s way over the top. No serious harm was done.”

He also voiced concerns about the rules around hair-pulling and off-the-ball incidents, calling for clearer guidelines. “I know refs are just applying the rules, but if that’s violent conduct, then the rules are wrong,” he added.

Despite the controversy, Sharpe praised Leeds United’s performance, calling it “exceptional” and far better than their league position suggests. He noted they played with intensity and organization, and could have scored five or six. “That was a top-10 display,” he said.

Much of the credit, he believes, goes to manager Daniel Farke for steadying the team after a rough spell. “There was pressure on him before December, but they stuck with him—and now you see why. He’s doing a great job. They’ll stay up, and next season Leeds will be even stronger.”

While the debate over Martinez’s red card will continue, the result itself could prove vital in Leeds’ fight for Premier League survival—and a sign of better things ahead.
