Roberto De Zerbi’s previous comments about Mykhailo Mudryk during his time as Brighton manager offer a strong insight into why Tottenham Hotspur were so interested in bringing the Ukrainian winger to North London.
Tottenham had enjoyed a largely successful summer transfer window, securing several of their preferred targets. However, the final stages of deadline day proved far more challenging for the Lilywhites, with a number of their attacking plans falling apart.
Spurs initially pursued Cody Gakpo, but their hopes of signing the Dutch forward faded after Manchester City entered the race for his signature.
Tottenham subsequently identified Iliman Ndiaye as a potential alternative. However, that move also failed to materialise after Manchester City reportedly intervened, leaving Spurs searching for another attacking option.
The club eventually turned their attention to Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who had also attracted interest from Leeds United, Coventry City and Strasbourg.
Leeds had already seen a loan proposal for Mudryk rejected by Chelsea before Tottenham stepped forward. Reports subsequently claimed that Spurs had received the “here we go” confirmation for a deal that would reunite Mudryk with De Zerbi.
The Ukrainian previously worked under De Zerbi during the 2021-22 campaign when the Italian was in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk. The manager’s previous assessment of Mudryk also helps explain why he was reportedly keen on bringing the winger into his squad.
During his time as Brighton boss, De Zerbi spoke highly of his former player and even made a remarkable prediction about his future.
“Mudryk is a fantastic player, I think he can win the Ballon d’Or in the future,” De Zerbi said. “I like him as my ex-player, but I am now Brighton coach; Brighton cannot buy Mudryk.”
Why Did Chelsea Spend £89m on Mykhailo Mudryk?
Mudryk’s career at Chelsea has failed to reach the levels many expected when the club invested heavily in his signing.
The winger has only recently returned following an anti-doping suspension and had not played competitive football since 2024. However, he has resumed training with the Chelsea squad as he looks to rebuild his career.
His impressive spell at Shakhtar was a major reason Chelsea were prepared to spend such a substantial fee on him.
During the 2021-22 season, Mudryk recorded 11 goal contributions in 19 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and providing nine assists.
He then enjoyed an explosive start to the following campaign, scoring 10 goals in just 18 appearances before attracting Chelsea’s attention.
The Blues eventually completed a huge £89 million deal to bring the winger to Stamford Bridge, with expectations that he could develop into one of Europe’s leading attacking players.
However, Mudryk struggled to reproduce his best form in England. Across 73 appearances for Chelsea, he managed just 10 goals, leaving the club and supporters frustrated by the return on such a significant investment.
Tottenham’s reported interest therefore represents a potential opportunity for Mudryk to revive his career, particularly with De Zerbi already familiar with his qualities and seemingly convinced that the Ukrainian possesses elite potential.
