Tottenham release statement after star faces racist abuse – ‘League position no excuse’
Tottenham have issued a statement defending Kevin Danso after the defender received racist abuse online, stressing that the club’s poor Premier League form does not justify such behavior.
The center-half was targeted following Tottenham’s draw with Brighton—a result that further damaged their survival hopes. Spurs remain in the relegation zone after letting a late lead slip.
Georginio Rutter scored Brighton’s stoppage-time equalizer after Danso was dispossessed inside his own box.
The Tottenham defender faced criticism for taking an extra touch instead of clearing the ball immediately. While some comments focused on his performance, others crossed the line into racial abuse. Tottenham have strongly condemned the “abhorrent racist abuse” and pledged to take immediate action, working with the Metropolitan Police to identify those responsible.
Club statement: “Racism will not be tolerated”
A club statement read: “Since yesterday’s fixture against Brighton—played during the Premier League’s No Room For Racism weekend—Kevin Danso has been subjected to significant and abhorrent racist abuse on social media. We have seen vile, dehumanizing racism. This behavior is without doubt a criminal offense. It will not be tolerated.”
“The club is taking immediate action. We are reporting all identified content to the Metropolitan Police, to relevant authorities in the perpetrators’ countries of residence, and to social media platforms. We will push for the strongest possible action against every individual identified.”
Tottenham had twice led against Brighton and thought Xavi Simons had secured a winner when he put them 2-1 ahead with under 15 minutes remaining. But they couldn’t hold on and remain a point behind West Ham, who have yet to play in matchweek 32. Roberto De Zerbi is still searching for his first win as Spurs manager.
“Form is no excuse for racism”
Despite their dire season, Tottenham made their position unequivocal: “Nothing about form or league position can ever excuse or explain racist abuse. There is no connection between performance on the pitch and the right to target a player with discrimination. Criticism of performances is part of the game. Racism is not.”
De Zerbi remains confident Tottenham can avoid relegation for the first time since 1977. He said: “If you watch the players, if you analyze the level of the players, I think we can win five games in a row.”
