Isak scored his first Premier League goal of the season as Liverpool twice came from behind to rescue a point against Forest. The Sweden international tapped home from Cody Gakpo’s excellent low cross shortly after half-time to bring Liverpool level.
However, despite getting on the scoresheet, Isak was criticised for his overall display.
Former Nottingham Forest star Stuart Pearce was particularly unimpressed with the Liverpool striker’s contribution, describing his performance as lacking energy and claiming that his goal was his only major contribution during the match.
But that assessment has sparked disagreement, with another Premier League analyst insisting that Isak’s critics are being too harsh on him.
The analyst believes Isak was right to express frustration during the match, particularly when he appeared to appeal for a corner after failing to connect with a cross.
According to the defence of the Liverpool forward, the incident should not be interpreted as evidence of poor effort or attitude. Instead, Isak’s reaction was viewed as that of a striker desperately trying to make something happen in a game where Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm during the opening stages.
Liverpool once again started slowly and found themselves behind after Dan Ndoye opened the scoring for Nottingham Forest. The visitors created several opportunities and looked capable of causing serious problems for Andoni Iraola’s side.
Isak eventually provided the response Liverpool needed, producing the kind of instinctive finishing expected from a £125 million striker.
The goal was particularly important for Isak after he endured a difficult start to his Liverpool career. The forward has been dealing with the pressure that naturally comes with such a significant transfer fee, while injuries have also disrupted his progress.
His goal against Forest could therefore prove to be an important confidence boost.
Liverpool eventually secured a second equaliser through summer signing Víctor Muñoz, whose spectacular strike rescued Iraola’s side from another disappointing result.
The Reds remain without a Premier League victory after their opening two matches under the new manager, having also drawn 2-2 with Newcastle United.
Despite the criticism surrounding Isak, his supporters will point to the fact that he has now opened his Premier League account and remains one of Liverpool’s most important attacking players.
The debate over his performance is unlikely to disappear immediately, but the striker has at least delivered the response that matters most for a centre-forward — a goal.
For Isak, the challenge now is to build on that moment and demonstrate that his best form is still to come at Anfield.
