Roberto De Zerbi Confirms Lucas Bergvall’s Tottenham Future

Roberto De Zerbi has made his position clear on Lucas Bergvall’s future at Tottenham Hotspur, insisting the Swedish midfielder will remain at the club despite interest from several Premier League sides.

Tottenham have enjoyed a busy summer transfer window, bringing in seven new players while allowing eleven members of the squad to leave. However, the club have also faced continued interest in a number of players who remain in north London.

Bergvall is among those who attracted significant attention earlier in the summer. The Sweden international reportedly wanted to leave Tottenham and was the subject of two bids from Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, with one offer believed to have reached £46 million.

Spurs rejected both approaches, meaning Bergvall remains with the club with fewer than ten days remaining before the transfer window closes.

De Zerbi makes Bergvall future clear

De Zerbi has now addressed the 20-year-old’s situation ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Despite reports that Bergvall had concerns over his playing opportunities, he featured prominently during Tottenham’s pre-season preparations, accumulating 274 minutes on the pitch.

Speaking to football.london, De Zerbi gave a definitive response when asked about the midfielder’s future, confirming that Bergvall will stay at Tottenham.

“Lucas Bergvall, 100 per cent [he is staying]. We spoke a lot in pre-season. He’s a top player, a top potential player. I like that he stays but I think now he wants to stay and we have no problem,” the Spurs boss said.

Bergvall faces battle for midfield minutes

Bergvall’s reported desire to leave earlier in the summer was believed to be linked to concerns over his chances of securing regular first-team football.

Tottenham strengthened their midfield significantly during the transfer window, bringing in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. The arrivals increased competition for places and reportedly left Bergvall uncertain about his prospects of playing regularly in his preferred position.

Both Bergvall and Tonali started Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Brentford, although neither midfielder was able to make a major impact during a difficult first half. Fernandes, who came on from the bench, was arguably the more impressive of the three during his brief appearance.

De Zerbi has repeatedly made it clear that no player will be guaranteed minutes under his management. Instead, those who perform consistently well in training and matches will earn their place in the starting XI.

For Bergvall, that means the path to regular football remains open — but he will have to prove himself in a highly competitive Tottenham midfield.
