The nature of the defeat has fueled speculation over Tuchel’s position, with Howe emerging as the bookmakers’ favorite to take over if the German departs.
Former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon had given England the lead early in the second half, finishing off a cross from Morgan Rogers.
However, Gordon was substituted in the 71st minute for Ezri Konsa, as Tuchel shifted to a five-man defensive formation—a move that drew sharp criticism from pundits like Wayne Rooney, who argued it cost England the game.
Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute, and Lautaro Martinez headed in a stoppage-time winner to seal the comeback.
The collapse echoed previous tournament heartbreaks under Gareth Southgate, including semi-final and final defeats in 2018, 2021, and 2024. After the Euro 2024 final, Tuchel had criticized Southgate’s England for lacking identity, clarity, and hunger—comments that have now resurfaced to haunt him.
Despite the backlash, Tuchel intends to remain in charge through Euro 2028, a plan backed by the FA. Having signed an extension earlier this year, he reiterated his commitment, saying, “We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros.”
That hasn’t stopped Howe’s name from circulating again. As the Premier League’s most prominent English manager, he was a popular choice to replace Southgate two years ago, though Howe has previously stated he was never contacted by the FA for an interview.
Focused solely on Newcastle, he has dismissed the speculation, emphasizing his commitment to the club.
Howe has faced some pressure from Newcastle supporters after a 12th-place finish last season, but he continues to enjoy the full support of the club’s hierarchy as they undergo a significant summer rebuild.
