Inter were pushed back into the market after a deal for Anan Khalaili fell through following a failed medical, and the England international has emerged as a possible alternative.
However, Tottenham’s valuation of Spence has become a major hurdle, with the Premier League side asking for more than Inter are willing to pay.
Romero, who has already made clear his desire to leave Spurs, was also discussed in the same meeting as Inter continue their search for central defensive options. But Tottenham’s €50 million asking price is seen as well beyond the Serie A champions’ reach.
According to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, Inter can only consider revisiting moves for the Tottenham pair as “last-minute deals” this summer.
Unless there is a sudden shift in ownership strategy, negotiations with Spurs are viewed as outside Inter’s current financial limits. Instead, the Milan club are focusing on more affordable opportunities that can bolster the squad without adding extra strain on their finances.
Whether Spence or Romero end up departing before the transfer window closes remains uncertain, but Tottenham may eventually have to lower their demands if they want to facilitate an exit. That pressure could intensify as the deadline approaches, especially with Romero eager to move on.
