Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has praised England youngster Henry Pollock ahead of next month’s Nations Championship meeting between the two rugby powerhouses.
Pollock recently starred in Northampton Saints’ Premiership final triumph over Exeter, earning the Player of the Match award. Although the talented 21-year-old has previously attracted criticism from some South African figures over his on-field attitude, Erasmus believes his performances deserve the spotlight.
Earlier this year, Springboks coaching staff member Duane Vermeulen jokingly claimed he would come out of retirement for 10 minutes just to play against Pollock. Erasmus, however, focused solely on the flanker’s rugby ability.
“He reminds me a lot of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu,” Erasmus explained. “Sometimes players receive a huge amount of attention, but that isn’t always something they seek. What matters most is what they deliver on the field, and his recent performances have been outstanding. As a coach, that’s all I’d judge him on.”
England assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth echoed those sentiments, describing Pollock as a player built for the biggest occasions.
“He’s an exceptional talent who offers a huge amount to the team,” Wigglesworth said. “The experience he’s gaining now is accelerating his development, and he seems eager to learn. Everything I’ve seen suggests he wants to improve, embrace coaching, and perform at the highest level regardless of outside opinions.”
Jason Hyatt Returns to Rugby with Gowerton RFC
Gowerton RFC have appointed experienced Welsh coach Jason Hyatt as their new Director of Rugby.
Hyatt stepped away from his long-serving role at Aberavon RFC earlier this year due to health concerns after spending 13 years leading the club. Aberavon later confirmed in April that he would not be returning.
Following a short break from coaching, Hyatt has now joined the Swansea-based side.
Announcing the appointment on social media, Gowerton RFC welcomed their new recruit, stating that Hyatt’s extensive experience would provide valuable support to both coaches and players.
He joins an established coaching team featuring head coach Rhodri Jones, forwards coach Will Griffiths, and backs coach Stuart Allen.
Jack Walsh Moves Closer to USA Debut
Former Ospreys full-back Jack Walsh appears to be edging towards an international debut with the United States after being included on the Eagles’ extended player list.
USA head coach Scott Lawrence recently announced a 31-man squad for the upcoming Nations Cup campaign, with preparations already underway for next year’s Rugby World Cup.
The Eagles will face Portugal, Zimbabwe, and Spain during the July window as they continue building towards a demanding 2026 schedule.
Lawrence explained that July provides an opportunity to reunite the core squad with the new coaching staff after several months apart, while laying the foundations for the team’s identity ahead of a packed international calendar.
Although Walsh has not been selected for the current camp due to availability, his inclusion on the extended list strongly indicates he is firmly in contention for a future Test debut.
Born in Florida and raised in Australia’s Manly, Walsh recently left the Ospreys to join French club Montauban. The former Australia Sevens player was previously eligible to represent the Wallabies and, had he remained in Wales, could also have qualified for Welsh selection next year.
Jake White Refuses to Rule Out Leinster Opportunity
Former Springboks head coach Jake White has admitted he would not dismiss the possibility of taking over at Leinster, describing the Irish giants as the “Barcelona of rugby.”
Leinster are preparing for life after Leo Cullen, who announced earlier this week that he will step down at the conclusion of next season. Several high-profile coaches, including Ronan O’Gara, Felipe Contepomi and Stuart Lancaster, have already been linked with the vacancy.
Asked whether he could be interested in the role, White refused to completely close the door.
“Rugby has taught us that unexpected things happen,” said the 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning coach. “If someone had asked me a year ago whether I’d still be coaching the Bulls next season, I would have expected the answer to be yes.”
White also paid tribute to Cullen, revealing the pair have known each other for many years.
He recalled watching Cullen play for Ireland Under-21s during his time coaching South Africa’s Under-21 side and remembered encouraging him to accept the interim Leinster job back in 2015.
White described Leinster as one of rugby’s most prestigious coaching positions, comparing it to managing a leading football club and praising Cullen’s immense contribution both as a player and coach.
Van Poortvliet Says Borthwick Wants England to Play Fearlessly
England scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet has revealed that head coach Steve Borthwick is urging his players to attack with confidence while still demanding the highest standards.
England begin their Nations Championship campaign against world champions South Africa at Ellis Park before travelling on to face Fiji in Liverpool and Argentina in Santiago del Estero during a demanding July schedule covering approximately 25,000 miles.
Following a disappointing run of four consecutive Test defeats, including England’s worst-ever Six Nations finish, pressure is mounting on Borthwick’s side ahead of the clash with the Springboks.
Despite the scrutiny, Van Poortvliet insists the squad is determined to play with freedom rather than fear.
“Representing England always brings pressure, and it’s easy to become worried about making mistakes,” he said. “One of our biggest goals is removing that mindset, and Steve has been excellent in encouraging us to be brave while maintaining high standards.”
