Jude Bellingham hits back at Thomas Tuchel in ITV interview as unhappy boss slams England stars

Jude Bellingham struck twice to fire England into the World Cup semi-finals with a 2โ€“1 extra-time win over Norway in Miamiโ€”but while the result secured their passage, the tournament’s standout star and his manager appeared to be on completely different pages when it came to assessing the performance.

Jude Bellingham needed just a single word to dismiss Thomas Tuchelโ€™s frustration with Englandโ€™s performance against Norway: โ€œWhatever.โ€

It was a striking retort from the Real Madrid star, one that is bound to raise uncomfortable questions about the dynamic between the England manager and his key player.

Bellingham was Englandโ€™s match-winner in Miami, scoring twiceโ€”including a first-half equaliser and an extra-time clinching goalโ€”to see off a resilient Norwegian side and his former teammate Erling Haaland.

Yet, as the stadium rang out with chants of โ€œHey Jude,โ€ Tuchel used his ITV interview to launch a scathing critique of his team. The German was far from satisfied, pointing to a display that saw England fall behind and rely on a VAR reprieve to avoid going 2-1 down in the second half.

โ€œWe made life very difficult for ourselves today,โ€ Tuchel said. โ€œThe result is great, weโ€™re in the last four, thatโ€™s fantastic, but no, Iโ€™m not happy with the performance.
In every aspect. The effort is there, but we made it hard for ourselvesโ€”sloppy play, too many technical errors, lacking speed and repetition. We were fortunate today.
Itโ€™s not about mentality. Itโ€™s about the quality of our game. Nothing to do with mentality.โ€

Tuchel added: โ€œWe will get better. We have to get better.โ€

When ITVโ€™s Gabriel Clarke raised Bellinghamโ€™s display, Tuchel was full of praise for the man of the match, saying: โ€œEnough said. He does it every game. World class.โ€

Bellingham, however, offered a different tone when reflecting on Englandโ€™s progress. Asked what had carried them through, he said: โ€œCharacter, persistence, even when things werenโ€™t clicking. We found a way to win againโ€”whether itโ€™s in 90 minutes or 120, weโ€™ll give everything. You saw that out there. So proud of this group once more.
This win is for everyone. The whole country is behind us. Itโ€™s a huge effort from all.โ€

When told that Tuchel had expressed disappointment with the teamโ€™s performance, Englandโ€™s No. 10โ€”now with six tournament goalsโ€”responded curtly: โ€œYeah, well, whatever. Whatever.
Itโ€™s tough out there. Itโ€™s a hard shift. All the players put in a huge shift, and my appreciation goes to them for doing that again.โ€

The exchange suggested a clear disconnect between Bellingham and Tuchel, despite the midfielderโ€™s outstanding individual form and Englandโ€™s run to the semi-finals.

Harry Kane offered a more diplomatic take on Tuchelโ€™s comments: โ€œHe told us in the dressing roomโ€”huge congratulations, enjoy it and celebrate, but thereโ€™s a part of him that knows we can do better.
Thatโ€™s actually a positive because weโ€™re in a World Cup semi-final and still feel we can improve and find another level. We should take that as a good sign.โ€

While Kane may see it that way, it appears Bellingham does not share the same outlook.
