Is Declan Rice suspended after yellow card vs Mexico?

Declan Rice picked up his second yellow card of the World Cup during England’s victory over Mexico—but does that mean he now faces a suspension?

The Arsenal midfielder had already been booked once in the group stage against Ghana, and when he received another yellow in the opening minute of the 3-2 win over Mexico, it looked like he might be heading for a one-match ban. However, under the current rules, that’s not the case.

Yellow cards are now wiped clean after the group stage and again after the quarter-finals. With the tournament expanded to 48 teams and an additional knockout round, FIFA adjusted the regulations to be more forgiving for sides that go deep into the competition.

Since Rice’s first booking came during the group phase, it has already been erased from his record. That means his caution against Mexico resets his count to just one—putting him back on the brink of a suspension rather than serving one outright.

That does mean, though, that if Rice is booked again against Norway in the quarter-finals, he would be ruled out of a potential semi-final. The yellow-card wipe only takes effect after the quarter-finals, so there remains a risk of suspension during that last-eight tie.

Once the cards are wiped again following the quarters, it becomes impossible for any player to miss the final due to yellow-card accumulation—which is precisely the intention behind the rule change.

Looking at Arsenal’s World Cup contingent, most have already steered clear of suspension trouble. Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, William Saliba, and Martin Ødegaard have all avoided yellow cards so far and have just one match left before the semi-final reset to navigate safely.

Leandro Trossard, David Raya, Mikel Merino, and Martín Zubimendi also remain without bookings, though they still have a last-16 fixture to play. If any of them pick up yellows in both that game and the quarter-final, they would incur a suspension.

For now, though, Rice appears to be the only Arsenal player genuinely at risk of a yellow-card ban for the remainder of the tournament.
