Jamie Redknapp has called on Tottenham to conduct a full review of what he described as a ‘humiliating’ season, which saw the club come dangerously close to dropping out of the Premier League.
A nervy 1-0 home win over Everton secured safety for Roberto De Zerbi’s team, who finished 17th with 41 points from 38 matches. Meanwhile, West Ham suffered relegation alongside Wolves and Burnley, despite a 3-0 thrashing of Leeds United.
There were scenes of immense relief and celebration at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after top-flight football was confirmed for another year. Joao Palhinha, who scored the winning goal, was seen huddling with his teammates in celebration, while De Zerbi sprinted onto the pitch following the final whistle.
“There will be a mix of absolute joy and also embarrassment—because you’ve ended up in this situation. But today you have to enjoy it, the fans deserve to, the players and staff too. However, starting tomorrow, there needs to be a major inquiry into how a club of this stature and with this fan base found itself in such a mess. The emotions today are fine, but this cannot happen again,” Redknapp told Sky Sports after the match.
“These are three huge points for them. De Zerbi has come in and made something of a difference, but this season hasn’t been good enough—not by any stretch.”
In his post-match press conference, De Zerbi appeared both relieved and delighted after guiding Tottenham away from relegation. When the Italian took over in March, the club were deep in a fight to preserve their Premier League status. Since arriving in north London, he has made a strong impression, picking up 11 points from seven matches to secure survival.
“We’ve worked well, but I’m fortunate because we have many top players,” said De Zerbi. “You could see in today’s game that under huge pressure, they played fantastically with the ball. It might have been the best performance since I arrived. It was an incredible match. The football was beautiful because when you give your all, the results follow.”
“I suffered a lot during the game, but my life is great because of the pressure in football. Without that pressure, it wouldn’t be as enjoyable.”
When asked about his hopes for Tottenham next season, De Zerbi replied: “Next season we need to build a top, top, top team. We don’t need to change too many players in the squad, but we must bring in some first-class players.”
