Darren Bent believes Scott Parker could bring long-term stability and success to West Ham United following his appointment as the club’s new manager.
Parker officially agreed to take charge of the Hammers this week, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract at the London Stadium after the club decided to part ways with Nuno Espirito Santo.
The former West Ham midfielder has already experienced a dramatic introduction to his new role. His first match in charge ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Cardiff City on Wednesday, with his side producing an impressive second-half comeback after going into the break three goals behind.
West Ham moved quickly to secure Parker’s services as they looked to find a new direction following Nuno’s dismissal.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has now shared his thoughts on the appointment, highlighting Parker’s impressive managerial record while warning supporters about the type of football they could see under their new boss.
Bent Explains What West Ham Supporters Should Expect From Parker
Parker has established an impressive reputation in the Championship, having guided Bournemouth, Fulham and Burnley to promotion during his managerial career.
The 45-year-old will now be hoping to repeat that achievement with West Ham and lead a fourth different club into the Premier League.
His work at Burnley during the 2024/25 campaign was particularly remarkable. Parker guided the Clarets to 100 points, although they narrowly missed out on the Championship title to Leeds United on goal difference.
Even more impressive was Burnley’s defensive record, with the team conceding just 16 goals throughout their 46 league matches.
Bent believes West Ham supporters should be prepared for a more pragmatic and results-driven approach under Parker, insisting that the new manager has the qualities required to deliver success.
Speaking on talkSPORT ahead of West Ham’s encounter with Cardiff City, Bent said:
“The last time he was in the Championship, he did an unbelievable job.
“What he did for Burnley, because they conceded 16 goals all season. Sixteen in the Championship, where you play about a million games. It’s unbelievable.
“West Ham fans need to get used to a style that’s effective, and Scott Parker can do that.
“I know there are reservations about what happens when he gets to the Premier League, and maybe people have questioned that.
“But there were a few names on the list, and I forgot about Scottie, if I’m honest, in terms of him getting the job.
“I thought Rob Edwards might be one, and Kieran McKenna was another. But when I heard Scott Parker’s name, I immediately thought, ‘Well, that makes a lot of sense’.
“He was absolutely incredible when he was there as a player.”
Can Parker Deliver The West Ham Way?
The appointment has also reignited discussions about the famous ‘West Ham Way’ and whether Parker will be able to deliver the attractive style of football traditionally associated with the club.
Hammers supporters have long appreciated entertaining, attacking football, but results will undoubtedly be the priority following the club’s recent struggles.
Although Parker’s teams have sometimes been criticised for adopting a cautious approach, his achievements in the Championship demonstrate his ability to build organised sides capable of winning consistently.
West Ham supporters may therefore need to accept a more disciplined and less adventurous style of football, particularly if it gives the club the best possible opportunity to secure promotion.
There is also the bigger question of whether Parker’s methods can remain effective once West Ham return to the Premier League.
However, that is a challenge for another day. The immediate objective is to get the Hammers back into the top flight as quickly as possible.
Given his impressive Championship record, Parker appears to have the experience and managerial credentials to lead that mission.
