BREAKING: England Hit by Major Injury Crisis as Five Key Players Withdraw Ahead of Huge Spain Clash at Wembley

England have suffered a major setback ahead of their opening UEFA Nations League fixture against Spain, with five players withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel’s squad because of injury-related issues.

Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento were all initially selected for England’s extended international window but have since been ruled out. Their withdrawals leave Tuchel without several important options as the Three Lions prepare to face the reigning world champions at Wembley on Saturday, September 26.

Palmer’s absence is particularly notable after the Chelsea attacker returned to Tuchel’s plans following his omission from England’s 2026 World Cup squad. Palmer had made an impressive start to the new campaign, recording four goals and two assists in seven appearances for Chelsea before his withdrawal.

Declan Rice is another significant absentee. The Arsenal midfielder has been an important part of England’s midfield and his absence removes one of Tuchel’s experienced options ahead of the difficult meeting with Spain.

Marcus Rashford has also been forced to withdraw. The Barcelona loanee was included in Tuchel’s original squad but is reportedly dealing with a hip problem. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento complete the list of players who have pulled out.

The Football Association confirmed the five withdrawals, prompting Tuchel to make changes to his squad. Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Everton midfielder James Garner have been called up as replacements.

Tuchel Faces Selection Headache

The timing of the withdrawals presents Tuchel with an immediate selection challenge. England are preparing to face Spain in their first Nations League match of the campaign, meaning the manager must adjust his plans without five players who were originally part of his squad.

Lewis Hall could also be a doubt for the Wembley fixture after missing England training on Wednesday, although he had participated in the previous day’s session.

Tuchel still has a number of attacking and midfield options available, including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Elliot Anderson. However, the loss of Rice and Palmer in particular reduces the depth available to the manager against a strong Spanish side.

England’s Nations League Campaign Begins Against Spain

The meeting with Spain will be England’s first match of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign. The Three Lions will then face Czechia, Croatia and Czechia again during the extended international window.

After the Spain fixture at Wembley, England are scheduled to travel to Prague before visiting Croatia in Rijeka. They will then return to Wembley for another meeting with Czechia on October 6.

Spain will provide a demanding opening test for Tuchel, particularly given England’s growing list of absentees.

With five players already withdrawn and Hall potentially doubtful, the England manager now faces the task of finding the right combination to cope with the reigning world champions while maintaining a strong start to the Nations League campaign.
