ENGLAND’S PENALTY STORM: THE DECISION THAT HAS SUDDENLY BECOME A HUGE TALKING POINT AFTER SPAIN DEFEAT

England’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley has left supporters debating one of the most significant moments of the match: the penalty decision that gave Harry Kane the opportunity to put the Three Lions 3-1 ahead.

Thomas Tuchel’s side appeared to have turned the game around after falling behind to Lamine Yamal’s early strike. Anthony Gordon restored parity before Kane headed England in front, putting the hosts in a commanding position against the reigning world champions.

However, the match changed dramatically in the second half.

Jude Bellingham was brought down inside the Spanish penalty area following a challenge from Rodri. The referee initially allowed play to continue, but VAR intervened and the incident was reviewed. After checking the footage, a penalty was awarded to England.

The decision has subsequently become a major talking point because of the nature of the contact and the fact that the referee had initially decided against awarding a spot-kick.

Once the penalty was confirmed, Kane stepped forward with the chance to give England a two-goal advantage. Given the importance of the moment and Kane’s reputation as one of England’s most reliable penalty takers, many inside Wembley expected the captain to convert.

Instead, the extraordinary happened.

Kane slipped during his run-up and struck the crossbar. Reports also noted that he unintentionally made contact with the ball with both feet during the attempt. The opportunity disappeared, and Spain were given a huge reprieve.

Just six minutes later, Spain punished England.

Alex Baena capitalised on an England mistake before finding the bottom corner to make it 2-2. Mikel Oyarzabal then completed Spain’s comeback in the 74th minute, calmly lifting the ball over James Trafford to make it 3-2.

England boss Thomas Tuchel subsequently described the penalty as a potentially decisive moment. England had been close to establishing a two-goal lead, but instead Spain were allowed back into the contest.

Anthony Gordon also acknowledged the importance of the missed opportunity, saying the penalty was a “massive moment” and that England would have been in a much better position had it gone in.

Kane himself later explained that his left foot gave way as he attempted to strike the ball. The England captain accepted that it was an unfortunate incident rather than an intentional action, but the timing made the miss particularly painful.

The penalty decision therefore remains an important part of the post-match discussion for two separate reasons: the controversy surrounding the VAR-awarded spot-kick and Kane’s bizarre miss immediately afterward.

Ultimately, Spain took advantage of England’s mistakes and secured a 3-2 victory at Wembley. The result means Tuchel’s team will have to examine both their defensive errors and their inability to protect a 2-1 lead when they had the opportunity to move two goals clear.

For England supporters, the penalty episode may remain one of the defining moments of the match—not simply because Kane missed, but because the entire sequence dramatically changed the momentum of a game England had appeared capable of winning.

With Spain recovering from 2-1 down to win 3-2, the penalty decision, Kane’s slip and the moments that followed are now firmly at the centre of the debate surrounding England’s costly night at Wembley.
