According to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, Tottenham could consider making a managerial change around the second international break in November if the Italian fails to turn the club’s fortunes around.
De Zerbi arrived at Tottenham with significant expectations, particularly after the club invested more than £300 million during the summer transfer window to strengthen the squad.
However, the early results have raised concerns. Tottenham have collected just one point from their opening three Premier League matches and, remarkably, are yet to score a league goal this season.
The poor attacking numbers have intensified scrutiny on De Zerbi, especially given the level of financial backing he received during the summer.
Wyness believes Tottenham’s hierarchy will initially give the manager time to implement his ideas, but patience could begin to run out if the results and performances fail to improve.
The former Everton executive suggested that the second international break, which runs from 9 to 17 November, could become an important deadline for De Zerbi.
He believes the manager needs to start producing results well before then, with pressure potentially increasing dramatically if Tottenham continue to struggle in front of goal.
The immediate challenge could prove particularly important. Tottenham are scheduled to face Everton, and Wyness believes the atmosphere inside the stadium could quickly turn against De Zerbi if Spurs concede first.
With Tottenham supporters already frustrated by the club’s inability to score, another disappointing performance could increase calls for change.
The situation is made even more complicated by the uncertainty surrounding Richarlison. The Brazilian forward was Tottenham’s leading scorer across all competitions last season, scoring 12 goals in 43 appearances, but he has been left out of the club’s Premier League squad this term.
De Zerbi has previously indicated that Richarlison wanted to leave Tottenham during the summer. The striker was reportedly linked with moves to Everton and Trabzonspor, but neither transfer materialised.
Football Insider further reports that Richarlison may not return to the Tottenham squad while De Zerbi remains in charge, amid reported tension between the player and manager.
That development leaves Tottenham with another major issue to resolve as they attempt to find their attacking rhythm.
For now, De Zerbi retains the backing of the club and is expected to be given time to work with his heavily revamped squad. However, the pressure could become increasingly difficult to manage if Tottenham continue dropping points and fail to find the back of the net.
