Forest were held to a 0-0 draw by Tottenham at the City Ground on Saturday, but the result was overshadowed by a major second-half controversy involving Neco Williams.
Williams appeared to put the home side ahead after reacting quickest to Morgan Gibbs-White’s goal-bound effort. The Forest defender appeared to head the ball over the line, only for the goal to be overturned following a VAR review.
The decision was made after VAR Peter Bankes determined that the ball had struck Williams’ hand immediately before it crossed the line.
Referee Craig Pawson subsequently overturned the original goal and awarded Tottenham a free-kick.
The Premier League Match Centre later confirmed that VAR had reviewed the incident and concluded that Williams had handled the ball before scoring.
However, the decision has sparked considerable debate, with Williams insisting that he headed the ball rather than deliberately handling it. Forest manager Oliver Glasner was equally frustrated, arguing that the evidence was not sufficiently clear and obvious for VAR to intervene.
“It’s not clear and obvious,” Glasner argued after the match, questioning whether the high threshold for VAR intervention had been met.
Forest could benefit from a rare VAR development

Williams himself maintained that the ball went between his arms and that he headed it into the net.
“I’ve seen the images and the replays and at not one moment did I think I handballed it,” Williams said after the game.

For Tottenham, the decision proved significant as they avoided falling to another defeat despite failing to register a shot on target.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have endured a difficult beginning to the new Premier League campaign and remain without a league win after three matches.

Glasner questions VAR intervention
