The player at the centre of the praise is Divine Mukasa, the teenage midfielder whose outstanding performance helped West Ham secure their first league win of the season.
Mukasa produced a match-winning display at the London Stadium, scoring twice as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side finally put three points on the board after a difficult opening to their Championship campaign.
The 19-year-old opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, unleashing a stunning effort from around 25 yards that flew into the net after striking the underside of the crossbar.
It was a moment of real quality from the Manchester City loanee, but his contribution went far beyond the goal.
Mukasa continued to influence the game with his movement, passing, defensive work and ability to carry the ball forward. His second goal arrived early in the second half after a clever attacking move involving Jarrod Bowen and Pablo.
Receiving the ball near the edge of the penalty area, Mukasa showed composure before shifting the ball onto his left foot and firing beyond José Sá.
His brace ultimately proved decisive as West Ham held off a spirited Wolves side to claim a 4-2 victory.
Nuno Espírito Santo was particularly pleased with the youngster’s all-round contribution, highlighting not only his goals but also the way he positioned himself, distributed the ball and contributed defensively.
Mukasa’s performance was also significant because of his connection with West Ham. The midfielder spent around a decade in the club’s academy before eventually moving to Manchester City, meaning his return to East London has given supporters a fascinating opportunity to watch a player they once knew develop elsewhere.
West Ham supporters will now hope Tuesday night’s performance represents the beginning of something special.
While Jarrod Bowen and Konstantinos Mavropanos also found the net, it was Mukasa who stole much of the spotlight. Mavropanos scored West Ham’s fourth goal before later turning the ball into his own net to give Wolves their second.
The victory also eased some of the pressure surrounding Nuno after West Ham had failed to win any of their opening three league matches.
For Mukasa, however, the evening could prove even more important.
A two-goal performance against Wolves has immediately raised expectations around what the young midfielder can offer West Ham during their promotion campaign.
If he can reproduce this level of energy, creativity and composure consistently, the player once viewed as an underrated academy talent could quickly become one of the most important figures in Nuno’s squad.
West Ham fans certainly appear to have taken notice.
