The proposed Tottenham deal was also linked to Richarlison’s potential return to Everton. The Brazilian forward had been expected to move back to his former club as part of the wider negotiations, but Manchester City’s intervention disrupted the entire arrangement.
Richarlison subsequently expressed his frustration publicly, making it clear that he did not want his future decided without his involvement. He confirmed that he remains under contract at Tottenham and indicated that any transfer would need to benefit all parties.
The Ndiaye setback comes during an extremely busy summer for Tottenham. De Zerbi has overseen a major rebuilding operation since taking charge, with Spurs spending heavily on several high-profile players.
Tottenham have already brought in Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush on a season-long loan with a mandatory purchase clause, while they also secured the services of Savinho and invested heavily in midfield and defence.
Despite those arrivals, De Zerbi had indicated that Tottenham were still looking to strengthen before the transfer window closed. The Italian coach had previously suggested that another signing could arrive, particularly because he wanted greater depth and competition within his squad.
Ndiaye’s decision therefore represents more than simply losing a transfer target. It leaves Tottenham having to reassess their attacking plans at the worst possible moment, with the deadline approaching and fewer alternatives available.
Manchester City’s intervention has also demonstrated the difference in pulling power between the two clubs. Ndiaye reportedly preferred the opportunity to join City once the champions entered the race, despite Tottenham having already reached an agreement with Everton.
For Spurs supporters, the timing will make the disappointment even harder to accept. Tottenham appeared to have done the difficult work of negotiating a deal with Everton, only for City to arrive late and take control of the situation.
De Zerbi must now turn his attention to alternative targets. Tottenham have already moved quickly in response, with reports indicating that they agreed a loan deal for Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, giving the manager another attacking option.
The transfer window has therefore produced another remarkable twist for Tottenham. After spending heavily and making major changes to De Zerbi’s squad, Spurs have been left frustrated by a late Manchester City move that has dramatically altered their plans.
