Sunderland’s 1-0 Fulham Win Had Fans Talking About More Than Just Wilson Isidor’s Goal

Sunderland finally got their first Premier League victory of the season on Sunday, but the 1-0 win over Fulham at the Stadium of Light generated plenty of discussion beyond the result itself.

The Black Cats secured all three points thanks to Wilson Isidor’s 75th-minute strike, with the substitute making a decisive impact after being introduced in the second half. The victory was particularly important for Régis Le Bris’ side after their opening-day defeat to Ipswich Town.

However, the match was far from a classic.

Both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for long periods, with the opening half producing little in the way of genuine attacking excitement. Fulham’s Josh King had one of the better chances before the interval but failed to find the target.

The goal proved enough to secure a valuable three points.

Interestingly, Fulham finished the match with more possession, but they failed to register a shot on target. Sunderland’s defensive organisation, particularly the performance of Nordi Mukiele, played a major role in frustrating the visitors throughout the afternoon.

One of the biggest talking points after the game, however, was Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa’s reaction.

The Spaniard was extremely critical of his players following the defeat, questioning aspects of their attitude, commitment and desire. The result means Fulham have now suffered two defeats from their opening two league matches under their new manager.

For Sunderland, the mood was understandably different.

Le Bris will be encouraged by the resilience his team showed in a tight contest where chances were difficult to come by. Rather than becoming frustrated by their inability to dominate the game offensively, Sunderland remained disciplined and eventually found the breakthrough.

Isidor’s goal was also significant on a personal level. The striker had recently committed his future to Sunderland by signing a new five-year contract, and he immediately rewarded that faith with the winning goal.

The victory also ended Sunderland’s long wait for a home league win over Fulham, with the Black Cats claiming their first victory against the Cottagers at home since December 2017.

While Sunderland still have plenty to improve, the victory could prove an important confidence boost. The Black Cats showed that they can win difficult matches even when their attacking performance is not at its best.

With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, Le Bris will now hope the club can strengthen further and build on the momentum created by this hard-fought victory.

For Fulham, meanwhile, Arbeloa has an immediate challenge on his hands. His team must find greater attacking creativity and intensity quickly if they are to avoid allowing their difficult start to develop into a serious early-season problem.
