“We can improve in the defensive phases but today was an unfair result,” De Zerbi said. “We are disappointed with the result because, until the first goal we conceded, we played better than Newcastle.”
The Italian manager also expressed his sympathy for the Tottenham supporters, who had hoped to see their team produce a stronger performance and result. De Zerbi stressed that his squad are still in the process of developing the understanding and unity required to compete consistently at a high level.
“We are disappointed for the result and for our fans. We are working to be a great team,” he explained. “When we become a team, we can change the story of the last two seasons for Tottenham.”
Despite the setback, De Zerbi insisted there was no reason for panic inside the Tottenham camp. Rather than allowing the defeat to affect the team’s confidence, he believes the players must focus on continuing their work on the training ground and improving their relationships on the pitch.
“Forget the result. I am not angry, we are working well and were unlucky today with the result,” he added.
“There is no panic. I know where we are going and what the plan is. I’m sorry for the fans for the result. We have to improve. We have to work hard on the pitch and find the connection between the players.”
De Zerbi’s comments suggest that he remains confident in the long-term project at Tottenham, even though the latest result will undoubtedly raise questions among supporters.
The manager believes patience and hard work will be crucial as he attempts to build a team capable of changing Tottenham’s fortunes after two difficult seasons. Establishing better defensive organisation, improving chemistry between the players and becoming more consistent will now be among his major priorities.
