Tottenham Told They Must Pay Extra £10m to Land Marquee Forward From Premier League Rivals

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been warned that they may need to increase their offer by another £10 million if they want to secure one of their major attacking targets before the summer transfer window closes.

Spurs have been extremely active in the transfer market under Roberto De Zerbi, but their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend has highlighted the need for further attacking reinforcements.

One of the names attracting significant attention is Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo. The Netherlands international has been linked with a possible move to north London, with Tottenham understood to be looking for additional quality in the final third.

Liverpool, however, are not under pressure to sell their attacker, and his latest performance could make negotiations even more difficult for Spurs.

Gakpo’s Price Tag Could Rise

Gakpo produced an impressive display during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday, scoring his side’s first equaliser and causing problems for the Newcastle defence throughout the match.

His performance has reportedly led to suggestions that Liverpool could now demand around £70 million for the forward, £10 million more than the figure previously being discussed.

The 27-year-old registered six shots, created three chances and made 10 touches inside Newcastle’s penalty area, underlining his influence during the game.

Tottenham’s interest therefore comes at a difficult moment, with Liverpool having little reason to reduce their demands for a player who remains an important part of their attacking options.

Tottenham Need More Firepower

Spurs’ need for attacking reinforcements has become increasingly obvious following their opening-day defeat at Brentford.

De Zerbi’s team struggled to create a consistent threat and were comfortably beaten 3-0, raising further questions about whether the current attacking options are strong enough to compete at the highest level.

Tottenham have already spent more than £200 million on first-team players this summer and their total expenditure is expected to move beyond £300 million following their agreement for Manchester City winger Savinho.

Savinho is set to arrive for an initial £75 million, with a further £10 million available through add-ons. Spurs are also working on a deal for Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush.

Despite that enormous spending spree, Tottenham’s attacking department remains an area De Zerbi wants to strengthen.

Liverpool Face a Difficult Decision

Liverpool could understandably be reluctant to allow Gakpo to leave, particularly with the new season already underway.

The Dutchman endured a difficult campaign previously, but his performance against Newcastle suggested he could be ready for a much stronger season. His ability to operate across the frontline would also make him a valuable option for Liverpool.

Reports have indicated that Liverpool would consider a significant offer, but Tottenham may now have to decide whether Gakpo is worth paying a premium for.

A £70 million price tag would represent a substantial investment, especially considering the money Spurs have already committed to their squad this summer.

Spurs Have Little Time

With the transfer window approaching its final stages, Tottenham cannot afford to waste too much time if Gakpo is genuinely one of their preferred targets.

The club’s recruitment strategy has already produced several major deals, including the £100 million signing of Sandro Tonali and the £85 million agreement for Savinho.

However, the defeat to Brentford demonstrated that spending heavily does not automatically solve every problem.

For De Zerbi, the priority now is to build an attack capable of matching the quality of the new midfield and defensive additions.

Gakpo would offer experience, versatility and Premier League pedigree, but Tottenham will have to decide whether paying an additional £10 million is the right move.

With Liverpool holding a strong negotiating position and Tottenham desperate to improve their attack, the coming days could determine whether Spurs are prepared to meet the increased asking price or turn their attention to alternative targets.
