During an appearance on Match of the Day, presenter Mark Chapman noted that seven of Ipswich’s summer recruits started the match—matching the number of new players Sunderland fielded at the outset of their own strong campaign last season. Rooney observed that Gary O’Neil’s rebuilt team already appears sharply attuned to his tactical demands.
“Maybe that’s something they’ve studied, because Sunderland had an excellent season last year,” Rooney said. “But I thought Ipswich—with a fresh squad and a new manager—were outstanding today, and much better prepared than they were at this stage last season. Their energy was the biggest reason they won this game.”
Rooney went on to point out multiple instances of Ipswich regaining possession high up the pitch. “Look at Enciso here, winning the ball back in a dangerous area, just being a constant nuisance for Sunderland,” he said. “Again, he recovers it here—his only focus is on defending. The defending from Sunderland is poor, but then he shows composure to square it to his teammate; that was excellent.”
The former England captain also emphasized Ipswich’s ability to swarm around the ball and swiftly turn recoveries into scoring chances. “Once again, Ipswich have numbers around the ball, win it high up, and here’s Emerson—he’s a big guy, but he shows strength and then quick feet to beat two players. He then keeps his cool to set up Enciso, who made the run into the box and was unfortunate with the finish. Then this is good football—holding the ball up, Enciso shifts it wide, but Ipswich have the intelligence to get bodies into the box. Sunderland are clearly struggling to contain them, and they’re very unlucky not to score here.”
Rooney felt Sunderland consistently failed to cope with Enciso throughout the match. “And here, Sunderland drop a bit deeper with men behind the ball, but a good ball down the channel causes problems—Enciso was a handful for them all afternoon. This is poor defending from Xhaka, really poor, and it leads to a break. It would have been a fantastic goal from end to end, but they were unlucky again.”
Finally, Rooney dissected the mechanics of Ipswich’s press and how it generated dangerous moments. “As Gary O’Neil described, the press was designed to force Sunderland to their left. You can see Emerson here pushing play that way; now Enciso has to close down. But this small adjustment from Emerson—blocking the pass back to the keeper—forces Sunderland into an error, and then it’s a foul. The yellow card gives Ipswich a hugely dangerous set-piece situation.”
