Harry Kane has offered his clearest response yet to speculation about a possible return to Tottenham Hotspur, with the Bayern Munich striker admitting that his desire to return to the Premier League is no longer as strong as it once was.
The England captain has previously been linked with Manchester United, while Tottenham have also remained closely associated with a potential reunion with their former star and all-time leading goalscorer.
However, Kane’s latest comments suggest that returning to England is currently far from being his main priority.
The 33-year-old has enjoyed a highly successful spell in Germany since leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023. After an initial campaign without the Bundesliga title, Kane has since helped Bayern reclaim domestic dominance.
His goals have been crucial to the club’s success, contributing heavily as Bayern secured back-to-back Bundesliga championships and lifted the DFB-Pokal during the 2025/26 campaign.
Kane’s decision to leave England for Germany was one of the biggest moves of his career. Having spent almost his entire senior career in English football, the former Spurs captain chose to challenge himself at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
At the time, there was plenty of speculation about whether he would eventually return to the Premier League. Kane had spent much of his Tottenham career chasing major trophies and building a reputation as one of England’s greatest-ever strikers.
His experience at Bayern, however, appears to have changed his outlook.
Kane is now entering the final year of his Bayern contract, naturally increasing speculation over his future. Barcelona and Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal have both reportedly been linked with an interest in the striker.
Bayern, meanwhile, are keen to prevent their star forward from leaving and have already started preparing for discussions over a new contract.
Kane has indicated that he is relaxed about the situation and remains focused on football rather than allowing transfer speculation to become a distraction.
Speaking to Kicker on Tuesday, August 18, Kane confirmed that talks over a new agreement are expected to begin soon.
“We obviously said we wanted to talk after the World Cup and after my holiday. So I’m not sure exactly when, but they’ll start this week, next week… We’ll start those talks,” Kane said.
“Like I’ve said before, we’re calm; I think they’re calm with the situation.”
Those comments underline the relaxed approach being taken by both Kane and Bayern as negotiations approach.
The striker has also continued to perform at an elite level despite uncertainty surrounding his long-term future. After England’s World Cup campaign, Kane enjoyed an extended break before returning to Bayern’s preparations for the new season.
He subsequently featured during pre-season, including Bayern’s 4-2 friendly victory over Heidenheim.
Despite appearing settled in Munich, Kane continues to attract attention from Premier League clubs.
Tottenham fans have understandably remained hopeful of seeing their former captain return to North London. Kane spent years at Spurs, becoming the club’s record goalscorer and one of the Premier League’s most prolific forwards before leaving in pursuit of silverware.
Manchester United have also been linked with the England international in the past, meaning there could be several potential destinations if Kane eventually decides to leave Bayern.
Another factor behind speculation over a Premier League return is Kane’s pursuit of Alan Shearer’s all-time scoring record.
The Bayern striker is currently 47 goals short of Shearer’s Premier League tally of 260. Returning to England could therefore give Kane a realistic chance of overtaking the former Newcastle United striker and becoming the competition’s leading goalscorer.
However, Kane’s latest comments suggest that the record alone is not enough to persuade him to leave Germany.
Kane Addresses Premier League Return
The strongest indication of Kane’s current thinking came during an interview with Henry Winter after he collected his second European Golden Shoe at an awards ceremony.
Rather than suggesting that he is actively seeking a move back to England, Kane explained that his desire to return to the Premier League has faded since joining Bayern.
“When I first left Spurs in 2023, for sure it was something that I thought I’d definitely be coming back. That itch isn’t there as much anymore,” Kane explained.
“I’m extremely happy here in Munich. It’s opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England. It’s made me appreciate European football even more.”
Kane also highlighted the importance of Bayern’s current squad, manager Vincent Kompany and his family’s happiness in Munich.
“With the team we have here, with the manager, my family are really settled here. It’s just about being in the best place possible. I never say never but, for now, I’m concentrating on Bayern Munich and we’ll see what the future holds.”
His comments represent a notable change from the mindset he appeared to have when he left Tottenham.
At the time, Kane’s move to Bayern seemed like a new chapter in his career rather than a definitive goodbye to English football. A potential Premier League comeback remained a realistic possibility somewhere in the future.
Now, however, the striker admits that the desire to return has diminished.
His happiness in Munich appears to be central to that decision. Kane has settled both professionally and personally in Germany, while his performances have justified Bayern’s decision to invest heavily in bringing him to the Bundesliga.
The presence of Kompany as manager is another factor Kane clearly appreciates.
With Bayern competing for major domestic and European honours, there is currently little reason for Kane to force a move away.
Instead, his immediate objective appears to be continuing Bayern’s success while discussions over his future take place.
A return to Tottenham therefore appears to be a possibility rather than an active ambition at this stage.
Kane’s statement that he “never says never” means the door remains open, but his overall message is unmistakable: Bayern Munich is his priority for now.
Kane Also Has Ballon d’Or Ambitions
While speculation continues over his club future, Kane is also chasing another major personal achievement.
The Bayern striker is among the contenders for the Ballon d’Or, with the prestigious award due to be presented in October.
Winning the prize would represent one of the biggest achievements of Kane’s already decorated career. Although he has collected numerous individual honours, the Ballon d’Or remains one of football’s most prestigious personal awards.
Kane has acknowledged how special winning it would be but insists that the possibility is not distracting him from the new season.
“I know I had a great season last season, but the focus is on this new season,” he said.
The England international also understands that the final decision is beyond his control because the winner will be determined by voting.
“The Ballon d’Or’s not in my hands. I’ve done what I can do in terms of putting in the performances. It’s now down to votes and other people and the media – stuff I can’t control – so we’ll see what happens.”
“Obviously, it would be amazing if it was to happen. But ultimately, it’s still two or three months away before that’s decided, so it’s not something that’s at the front of my mind right now.”
For now, Kane’s focus remains firmly on Bayern Munich and the campaign ahead.
Bayern are scheduled to open their Bundesliga season against Stuttgart on August 28, giving Kane another opportunity to add to his remarkable goalscoring record.
Tottenham supporters may continue dreaming about a reunion with their former captain, but Kane’s latest comments provide perhaps the strongest indication yet that a return to North London is not currently close to happening.
His priorities are clear: continue producing at the highest level for Bayern, compete for major trophies, negotiate a potential new contract and push for Ballon d’Or recognition.
A Premier League return has not been completely ruled out, but for now, Kane appears more than comfortable with his decision to leave England and continue the next chapter of his career in Germany.
