To make room for new faces, Tottenham will need to offload some current players. While Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr are considered surplus to requirements, and Cristian Romero has already been placed on the transfer list, the club is also fighting to retain certain players who could still end up leaving.
During the 2026 World Cup, Lucas Bergvall handed in a transfer request after noticing De Zerbi’s strong interest in Fernandes and Tonali. Meanwhile, Djed Spence—who turned heads with standout performances for England on the big stage—is now attracting serious attention from top clubs, including Inter Milan.
De Zerbi takes a firm stance
Speaking to the media, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, De Zerbi delivered a clear message to his key men: “I would like you to stay if you want to stay. If you don’t want to stay, if you want to leave, then you have to leave.”
Straightforward, blunt, and entirely reasonable—that’s De Zerbi’s managerial style. Both Spence and Bergvall will have to respect the Italian’s honesty. De Zerbi clearly rates them highly and would prefer to keep them, but he won’t stand in the way of players who aren’t committed to the club’s vision.
Tottenham are still trying to convince Bergvall to stay, despite his transfer request and interest from Nottingham Forest. De Zerbi has claimed he’s unaware of any formal request, but Spurs supporters remain skeptical—and the Swedish international has yet to confirm his future with the club.
As for Djed Spence, he appears fully committed to Tottenham and hasn’t actively pushed for an exit. However, with De Zerbi favoring Destiny Udogie at left-back and the recent additions of veteran Andy Robertson and promising youngster Souza, Spence might find more regular minutes elsewhere.
