Tottenham Hotspur’s busy summer transfer window could soon include a major departure, with reports suggesting the club are prepared to sanction the exit of captain Cristian Romero following the FIFA World Cup.
After narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day of last season with a crucial victory over Everton, Spurs have embarked on an ambitious rebuild under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The North London club has invested heavily in strengthening the squad, making it one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer.
Tottenham have already committed around £237 million to secure the signings of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke. They have also added valuable experience by bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka on free transfers.
With several new arrivals boosting the squad, departures are expected as De Zerbi continues to reshape the team. According to Sportitalia, as reported by FC Inter 1908, Spurs have accepted that Romero is likely to leave before the transfer window closes.
The Argentine international has emerged as one of Inter Milan’s leading defensive targets. The Italian giants initially contacted Tottenham regarding Djed Spence, but discussions reportedly shifted toward Romero, with Inter now seriously exploring a move for the 28-year-old centre-back.
Inter are eager to reinforce their defence after the departures of veterans Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi. Although Tottenham’s current valuation is believed to be higher than Inter are willing to pay, the Serie A side remain hopeful that negotiations will produce a more affordable deal. Romero is also said to be interested in returning to Italy, where he previously impressed with Atalanta after leaving Juventus.
Since joining Spurs, Romero has made 156 appearances in all competitions and was instrumental in helping the club end its lengthy wait for silverware by winning the UEFA Europa League in 2025.
Despite the possibility of losing their captain, Tottenham already have replacements in place. Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have strengthened the defensive unit, while the club is also keen to secure Micky van de Ven’s long-term future by opening talks over a new contract.
De Zerbi has also confirmed that Tottenham’s transfer business is far from complete, hinting that more arrivals and departures are expected before the deadline.
“I feel very good because we are working well,” the Italian coach said.
“I think we are building a very good team with some very important new players, and we are beginning a new chapter in the club’s history.”
De Zerbi explained that he had spent significant time studying the club before officially taking charge and understood the long-term vision from the outset.
“Now we are fully involved in the project and excited about creating a very strong team,” he added. “Our transfer business is not finished yet, both in terms of players coming in and leaving. But at this moment, I feel very happy, proud and optimistic.”
The Spurs boss also stressed that his ambition goes beyond assembling talented players.
“We want to build a team with quality, but also one that has soul, passion and the values that define this club.”
Tottenham are also continuing to monitor attacking options, with Manchester City’s Savinho and Bournemouth youngster Eli Junior Kroupi among the players reportedly on their shortlist as De Zerbi continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new campaign.
