Following England’s hard-fought victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, five Three Lions players were initially walking a disciplinary tightrope. However, Jordan Henderson’s tournament-ending injury has since reduced that number to one—and Kane isn’t among those who need to tread carefully in Saturday night’s Miami clash.
The mix-up arose when Kane, still chasing the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot, gave away a penalty in the second half after a high challenge on Mexico midfielder Brian Gutierrez.
Referee Alireza Faghani consulted the VAR monitor before awarding the spot-kick, and after being swarmed by players from both sides, he brandished a yellow card—apparently in Kane’s direction. A TV graphic further fuelled the confusion by suggesting the captain had been booked.
However, FIFA’s official match records clarify that the 68th-minute booking was actually given to Marc Guehi, meaning the on-screen graphic attributing it to Kane was simply a mistake. As a result, any concern over the England skipper being one booking away from a ban heading into the Norway game has now been laid to rest.
This World Cup features an extra knockout round due to the tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams, prompting FIFA to tweak the yellow-card rules. Previously, two yellow cards picked up before the semi-finals would trigger an automatic one-match suspension.
Under the new system, yellow cards are wiped twice during the tournament—once after the group stage and again following the quarter-finals.
So, the England players who do need to be cautious against Norway are Guehi, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Nico O’Reilly.
